Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 06/01/2018

A seasonal vauclusian spring of which the eastern cave entrance (an estimated 3 m wide and 1 m high) faces east (Arbenz, T 2013.11.23 Lamyliangplan.pdf) and is, literally quoted, hiden by a big bloc (Bartholeyns, J P 2010.02.18 Mss: Krem Lamyliang 1) or, perhaps, hidden behind a boulder. The eastern cave entrance is one out of currently three known cave entrances which give access to a dry [cave] gallery with speleothems and with a 7 m deep pitch down to the water level (Bartholeyns, J P 2010.02.18 Mss: Krem Lamyliang 1) or, if you prefer, not only to a hole in floor 6.33 m to water level (Arbenz, T 2013.11.23 Lamyliangplan.pdf) but also to a 4 m pitch going to a wet lead (Anonymous et al. 2010.03.29 Mss: Diary (current) 2010.doc: 18th February). EVALUATION -- literally quoted: A whole area of sinks indicates a break down area above the east end of Krem Man Krem. Krem Lamyliang 1 is most likely a resurgence of this system, draining towards East and the Kopili (Arbenz, T 2013.11.24 Mss Krem Lamyliang 1). ETYMOLOGY: The origin and meaning of the Synteng Khasi (Pnar) cave name -Krem Lamyliang- has not yet been identified but seems to refer to a -krem- or cave named after three [occurrences of] -Myliang- (or so) or Cave of Myliang (note 1). On the other hand, a funny communication error may have occurred, resulting in something along the lines of a Team Will Be Guided Cave, when a statement of the guides (Pynsheng Shadap and Morning Star Lamurang), who only confirmed -lam yn liang- (note 2), was taken as a cave name (Bartholeyns, J P 2010.02.18 Mss: Krem Lamyliang 1; Bartholeyns, J P 2010.02.18 Mss: Krem Lamyliang 2; anonymous Brooks, S J 2012.06.23 undated Meghalaya 2012 Survey Summary Kopli.xls). SITUATION 2010a: Arbenz, T (2010.03.31 cave distribution map: Pala_Ridge_4-10.pdf) indicates the locations of three cave entrances to Krem Lamyliang 1 and Krem Lamyliang 2&3 at two distinct spots on the surface about halfway between the explored parts of the lower reaches o Krem –>Man Krem and the orographically left (locally west) bank of the Kopili River. SITUATION 2010b: Comparatively interesting is an attempt to determine the location of the cave entrance to the 1st Krem Lamyliang as a spot in the middel [sic! qua: midst] of the bush at 20 m left side from a path going down from the top of the ridge to the bottom of the valley (Bartholeyns, J P 2010.02.18 Mss: Krem Lamyliang 1) where the bush (perhaps the Law Mynliang?) is unspecified and a path is unspecified, the direction of going down is unspecified, the top is unspecified, and the ridge is unspecified, whilst unspecified the valley (of the Mynliang?) is not identified. SITUATION 2010c: Somebody (perhaps with fish & chips on his or her mind) wanted to place the cave entrance to Krem Lamyliang in a fry river bed (note 3) with an unidentified name, which was understood to lie at an unidentified distance to the west / North West of Umkhrypong [sic!] (Anonymous et al. 2010.03.29 Mss: Diary (current)2010.doc: 18th February). The latter is possibly an attempt to refer to the village of Umkyrpong (25°26'04”N: 92°34'47”E). SITUATION 2012: Little doubt remains that rather the entrances than the caves lie in the bottom of a large doline (anonymous Arbenz, T et al. 2013.08.07 Diary 2012.doc). SITUATION 2013: At the mouth of a short ravine, half way down the east flank (Kopili side) of the ridge which is leading away to the North from Kseh village (Arbenz, T 2013.11.24 Mss: Krem Lamyliang 1).APPROACH 2010: Estelle Sandford and Jean-Pierre Batholeynes are said to have passed by the cave entrance to Krem Lamyliang 1 somewhere on the way back from –>AA Cave (Sandford 2010) which was then referred to by the no-name Krem Kroh [sic!] (Anonymous et al. 2010.03.29 Mss: Diary (current) 2010.doc: 18th February). APPROACH 2013: From the church in Kseh take the Shaktiman track that leads north and along the ridge towards Umkyrpong. Follow the road to position N25°25’55.1’’ / E92°35’24.0’’. Lookfor a footpath that leads doewn to NE and follow it for about 300m to reach the reach the cave at N25°26’14.0’’ / E92°35’25’53.9’’. It is 20m to the left (NE) of the path (Arbenz, T 2013.11.24 Mss: Krem Lamyliang 1). CAVE DESCRIPTION 2010: A relatively Little [cave] entrance 3 m wide 1 m high lies hiden [sic!] by a big bloc [sic!]. Dry gallery with speleothems. Not far from the [cave] entrance, a pitch 7 m [illegible eniteit at = gives access to] the water level (Bartholeyns, J P 2010.02.18 Mss: Krem Lamyliang 1). CAVE DESCRIPTION 2013: The dry mud floored (February 2010, 2012) cave passage is 2 m to 5 m wide and stooping to walking sized in height (1 m to 2 m) and contains stalactites. After 40 m a side passage off to the north is a relatively low and muddy bypass but the cave passage (past a first pitch 4 m down to a lower level) continues very nicely decorated for another 20 m where it joins the narrow oxbow and continues as a 12 m long rift with muddy floor up to a partially blockd [western cave] entrance. The lower level, which is best reached via the abovementioned 4 m pitch, leads on the one-hand side 30 m east to one more 4 m pitch down to unexplored cave passages at the water level and, on the other hand, 30 m westish and across a shallow lake (pool of water, covering some 25 square metres) to a complex of low and high tubes (Arbenz, T 2013.11.24 Mss: Krem Lamyliang 1) which, however, are far too difficult to explore or to understand and survey. CAVE POTENTIAL: Since cavers understood that the relatively complex system of low and high tubes (Arbenz, T 2013.11.24 Mss: Krem Lamyliang 1), which constitutes the upstream continuation, unfortunately narrows complicated (Arbenz, T 2013.11.23 Lamyliangplan.pdf), a continuation at the level of the water is possible (Arbenz, T 2013.11.24 Mss: Krem Lamyliang 1). SPELEOMETRY: Caving records suggest the following survey lengths: 68.48 m Anonymous Brooks, S J (2012.06.23 undated Meghalaya 2012 Survey Summary Kopli.xls 124.00 m Bartholeyns, J P (2010.02.18 Mss: Krem Lamyliang 1) 124.02 m Brooks, S J et al (2010.03.29 Mss: Survey summary.xls) 134.01 m Arbenz, T (2010.04.18 Mss: Pala Positions.xls) 202.47 m Arbenz, T (2013.11.24 Mss: Krem Lamyliang 1). CAVE CLIMATE: The subterranean air currents, which flow between the two cave entrances, trigger considerations according to which Draught appears to be blowing through various entrances (Arbenz, T 2013.11.24 Mss: Krem Lamyliang 1). CAVE LIFE: Huntsman spiders (Heteropoda), animal foot prints [note 4] at the lake [i.e. the oceans] in the lower level. Small spiers [minute spiders represented by] hundreds of “babies” with their mother. A green grasshopper, 4 cm long with a pointed nose (Arbenz, T 2013.11.24 Mss: Krem Lamyliang 1).d [western cave] entrance. History

EXPLORATION HISTORY: 2010.02.18, trip 1: Pynsheng Shadap and Morning Star Lamurang guided not only Melquire 'Mel' Laitphlang but also Estelle Sandford and Jean-Pierre Bartholeyns to an offhand invented but fully unspecified Sintung / Kopili Area (bullshit) where, on their way back from the so-called Krem Kroh (currently –>AA Cave Sandford 2010.02.18), they were shown the eastern cave entrance tp Krem Lamyliang who [sic!] was surveyed except the pitch going to a wet lead (Anonymous et al. 2010.03.29 Mss: Diary (current) 2010.doc: 18th February). Two months later, it was Estelle Sandford, who recalled how she opted for a local recce trip with Jean-Pierre and Mel with local guide. We were shown a resurgence into the Kopili River, which didn't look very inspiring and a couple of other caves, all called Krem Lamyliang, so we surveyed the first one of these we'd found (Sandford, E 2010.04.16 Mss: Caves 'n' Corals: 18th February). Another two years later, it was Thomas Arbenz wo reconstructed events dated 18th Feb 2010 as E. Sandford, JP Bartholeyns and M. Leitphlang (guided by [nice to look down upon] locals) explored and surveyed the main passage (Arbenz, T 2013.11.24 Mss: Krem Lamyliang 1). 2012.02.20, trip 2: Unidentified knowledgeable people (no names mentioned), who were familiar with the area, stepped out of their way to guide RH, NB, GM (Richard 'Rich' Hudson, Nicola 'Nicky' Bayley, and Graham Marshall) on 20.02.2012 to Krem Lamyliang 1 where they 68.46, Lower series linked to original survey (anonymous Brooks, S J 2012.06.23 undated Meghalaya 2012 Survey Summary Kopli.xls). Merely 21 months after the events, it was Thomas Arbenz who succeeded to reduce the 2nd caving trip to 19th Feb 2012: N.Bayley, R.Hudson, R. Davidson and D.Cooke explored and surveyed the pitch and a part of the lower level (Arbenz, T 2013.11.24 Mss: Krem Lamyliang 1). 2013.11.13: Thomas Arbenz never saw any part of this cave but anyhow fabricated the cave plan Lamylianplan.pdf within only 21 months after cavers had abandoned the survey and gave up completely to enter or to explore the unknown parts of this vauclusian spring.
