Description
An unspecified cave entrance (unidentified shape, unidentified dimensions, unidentified orientation, unidentified characteristics) is said (Brown 2008.02.18 Mss: Hummingbird …) to give access to gives access to a pothole where a kind of shaft (pit, pitch) intersects a more or less horizontal and partly active stream cave passage, which generally drains towards SSW and contains swimming sections, at least one aven, a possible sump, and a so-called boulder collapse which, however, does not actually consist of a collapsed boulder but rather represents a collapsed part of cave passage, which appears to be choked with dislocated boulders. ETYMOLOGY: No autochthonous, indigenous or locally known name has been identified for this cave outsiders made up private names. Brown (2008.02.18 Mss: Hummingbird …), for example, created a Hummingbird Hawk Moth Hole (note 1) and correlated this with -Thapbalong Sim- (note 2) but gave no explanation (note 3). Brooks (2009.03.06 Mss: Overview 2009) forcesKrem Thapbalong Sim to equal Hummingbird Cave though there are no humming-birds (Macrochires = Apodiformes: Trochilidae) at such altitudes in Meghalaya (note 4) while the Khasi -ka thapbalong- is a large black butterfly (SINGH, N 1906: 224) and -sim- means bird (SINGH, N 1906: 204). Simon J Brooks & Mark W Brown (in: ARBENZ et al. 2008: 41) repeat the spelling Krem Thapbalong Sim in connection with a very interesting accumulation of 351.6 lengthwise measured metres. Arbenz, T (2008 Fieldbook: 101) introduced the three-worded spelling Thapba Long Siem which was taken up by Brooks, S J et al. (2009 Mss: Diary.doc) in February 2009 (note 5). At an advanced stage of caving, however, the English cave name -Humming Bird Cave- was translated by a German Kolibrihöhle because WINKLER, R (2010: 108) had been misled to believe that Am Eingang der Kolibrihöhle wurde ganz offensichtlich ein Kolibri gesichtet … SITUATION: The entrance to this cave has been reported to lie in the southern part of th western side of the Shnongrim ridge at three different locations, up to about 680 m apart from each other. Looking through the lens of BROWN & BROOKS (2008: 17), Krem Thapbalong Sim is one of two new caves (the other new (sic!) cave is Krem –>Shynrong Shrieh), which were discovered and explored on the south flank of the ridge in what was in his eyes a previously a blank area on the Shnongrim ridge map. POSITION 1: At an estimated 80 m without orientation from N25°17'50.8”: E092°29'27.9” (note 8) -- as M. W. Brown (2008.02.18 Mss: Hummingbird …) reports this cave entrance from a location without GPS position: A Shakti track / footpath contours from Lelad [note 7] south around 1050 m asl contour until it rejoins the road at the narrow 'saddle' [1.6 km in a direct line or about 2 km along the road] south of Tangnub. At N25°17'50.8”: E92°29'27.9” a dry stream intersects this. Following stream down circa 80 m [possibly west] leads to the top of a shaft. This, if 80 m due east rom the track, would take Thloolong Thapbalong Sim near N25°17'50.8”: E092°29'27.9” (or so). POSITION 2: Estimated 80 m without orientation away from N25°17'30.1”: E092°29'36.3 (±4.2 m): 1047 m asl --as M. W. Brown (2008.02.18 Mss: Surface mapping / reconnaissance) reports that it is this GPS position an estimated 80 m led [leo?] to Hummingbird Hawk Moth Hole. This, if 80 m due east from the track, would take Thloolong Thapbalong Sim near N25°17‘30.1”: E092°29‘33.5” (or so) and at a linear distance of 682.2 m approximately SSE (-640.3 m north, 235.3 m east) from the other position. POSITION 3: Near WGS84 N25°17'29-: E092°29'33- since T. Arbenz tells me (note 8) that M.W. Brown amended the Shnongrim Ridge map (T. Arbenz, T 2007) by adding a blackplan near these coordinates an thus at linear distances of 689 m approximately SSE (-674.3 m north, 142.9 m east) from the starting point of position 1 (Brown 2008.02.18 Mss: Hummingbird …) and 98.5 m approximately WSW (-34.0 m nort, -92.5 m east) from the starting point of position 2 (Brown 2008.02.18 Mss: Surface mapping / reconnaissance). APPROACH: Brown (2008.02.18 Mss Surface Mapping / Reconnaissance sheet): Following the path from Lelad on the West side of the [Shnongrim] ridge, heading south, which more or less follows a 1050 asl contour (GPS), the following stream beds are crossed 1, 2, 3, 4. (dry today) Following downstream from 4, an est 80 m led [lead? leads?] to 'Hummingbird Hawk Moth Hole' Point where Shaktiman track joins road was GPS 6. From 2 following streambed down ca. 150 m leads to a shaft (Early Morning Pot) No north east EPE asl note 1 N25°18'05.4”: E092°29'31.4” ±3.7 1065 m streambed 2 N25°17'51.8”: E092°29'31.1” ±4.8 1053 m streambed [150 m from Early Morning Pot] 3 N25°17'42.9”: E092°29'30.7” ±3.6 streambed 4 N25°17'30.1”: E092°29'36.3” ±4.2 1047 m streambed 5 N25°17'50.8”: E092°29'27.9” ±4.3 shaft [80 m from Hummingbird … Hole] 6 N25°17'22.2”: E092°29'56.5” ±.5 road CAVE DESCRIPTION 2001.1 (Brown 2008.02.18 Mss: Hummingbird …): None (note 9). CAVE DESCRIPTION 2001.2: Both Krem Thabalong Sim (i.e. –>Humming Cave) and Krem Shynrong Shrieh (i.e. –>Monkey Skull Cave) contain sections of trunk passage (BROWN & BROOKS 2008: 17). CAVE DESCRIPTION 2009: According to Robert Winkler (2009.02.15), there is one passage in this cave, which is known to lead after 40 m to a sump: It is almost sure that this way leads towards Krem Knai [i.e. –>AA CAVE, Tangnub 2008-01, a.k.a. Krem Khnai]. Another questionmark further downstream was followed for about 35 m. This lead is not bad, a bit crawling around big boulders but seems to be only a bypass of the main passage but another trip to this area would be good before exploring this part of the cave is given up (Brooks, S J et al. 2009.02 Mss -Diary 2009.doc- Sunday 15th). Bibliography 06/01/2018History
EXPLORATION HISTORY: 2008.02.08: Mark W. Brown (2008.02.18 Mss: Hummingbird …) … finds a cave known probably to the local people since time immemorial. 2008.02.21, trip 1: Brown, M W (2008.02.18 Mss: Hummingbird …) and Anne Vanderplank … rig until they run out of rope. Brown, M W et al. (2008 Mss 'Meghalaya 2008 diary' Thursday 21th February) confirm that Mark and Anne went to Krem Thapbalong Sim and rigged until they ran out of rope. 2008.02.22, trip 2: Brown, M W (2008.02.18 Mss: Hummingbird …), A. Vanderplank, Louise Korsgard and Henry Rockcliff … complete rigging and surveying of shafts, finding the Lunar Tunnel leading off at the base. Brown et al. (2008 Mss: 'Meghalaya 2008 diary' Saturday 22nd February) confirm that Mark B., Anne, Henry and Louise went to Krem Thapbalong Sim and finished rigging and surveying the shaft. 2008.02.23, trip 3: Brown, M W (2008.02.18 Mss: Hummingbird …) has lost interest in keeping track but Brown, M W et al. 2008 Mss: 'Meghalaya 2008 diar' Saturday 23rd February) narrates how Imo, Jeff, and Mark T, went to Krem Thapbalong Sim where they surveyed a long draughty, wet crawl that met a 3 m wide passage going both ways. They also found an aven. Fraser and Ronnie were with the team to film the shaft at the beginning of the trip. 2008.02.24, team 1, trip 4: Anne, Louise, Torben and Philippa surveyed the left hand (upstream?) through lots of swimming, ongoing (Brown et al. 2008 Mss: 'Meghalaya 2008 diary' Sunday 24th). 2008.02.24, team 2, trip 5: Mark T., Jeff and Imo surveyed the right hand passage to a possible sump. From the sump they went up an inlet to a boulder choke (Brown et al. 2008 Mss 'Meghalaya 2008 diary.doc' Sunday 24th). 2008.02.25, trip 6: Peter Ludwig, Ksan Kupar 'Ronnie' Mawlong, Fraser E. Simpson and Jean-Pierre Bartholeyns … went to Krem Thapbalong Sim to take pictures and derig the shaft (Brown et al. 2008 Mss 'Meghalaya 2008 diary.doc' Monday 25th). 2009.02.03, trip 7: Torben Redder, Luise Korsgaard and Robert Winkler … rigged Thapba Long Siem [sic!] except for the last p5 and p8. The cave entrance was GPS'ed again and it was found to be closer towards Shyngrong Shrieh. Surface sheet has been filled in for the way to the entrance (Brooks, S J et al. 2009 Mss 'Diary.doc' Tuesday 3rd). 2009.02.03, trip 8: Torben Redder, Louise Korsgaard and Robert Winkler … went back to Thapba Long Siem, rigged the last two pitches and started surveying from Turnaroundabout, where last year's expedition left a wide open passage heading south. They surveyed 373.69 m downstream in a pleasant stream passage (almost no water flow a this time of the year, but it definitely takes a lot of water during the rainy season). It is still ongoing but wetsuits are needed as there is some swimming (Brooks, S J et al. 2009 Mss 'Diary.doc' Wednesday 4th). 2009.02.03, trip 9: Louise Korsgaard, Torben Redder and Polchung 'Chung' Kipgen (Indian Navy) … continued surveying downstream. 17599 m was surveyed with a couple of leads still left (one good and one small). At the end we reached a couple of boulder chokes, possibly part of one big choke. At the end of one boulder choke was a 5 m by 10 m chamber with an entrance 0.5 m by 0.5 m in the roof, about 4 m up. Leaves and branches seen through entrance and sound of cikadas heard. Would be a bold climb (Brooks, S J et al. 2009 Mss 'Diary.doc' Thursday 5th). 2009.02.05, trip 10: Robert Winkler, Henry Rockcliff and Roshan Yengkhom (Medical Assistant, Indian Navy) … descended the pitches and made their way southwards along the main passage. They surveyed the first side passage (74.17 m) that needed doing. This passage was finished in a flat-out wet passage which to continue would require smashing the stal off the roof. They then went on to the the next side passage and surveyed 101.82 m, leaving it ongoing (Brooks, S J et al. 2009 Mss 'Diary.doc' Thursday 5th). 2009.02.07, trip 11: Robert Winkler, Torben Redder and ikram Singh Kirola (Leading Seaman, Indian Navy) surveyed … the way on, which Henry, Roshan and Robert had left unexplored two days ago. The passage is rather narrow, about 2 m wide and 1 m high but half of it is filled with mud and water). At point 3.19, there is a little passage coming inside from the north (left) with a very little stream and some 'snot gobblers”. After 270.81 m of surveying, they reached [Krem] Shyngrong Shrieh [note 7]. So the connection is done and we have a new system: Humming Monkey System (Brooks, S J et al. 2009 Mss 'Diary.doc' Saturday 7th). 2009.02.11, trip 12, team 1: Henry Rockcliff, Simon J. Brooks, and Joanne 'Jo' Hardy … surveyed 163 m of the leads in the upstream section of the main streamway and noticed many more leads remaining (Brooks, S J et al. 2009 Mss 'Diary 2009.doc' Wednesday 11th). 2009.02.11, trip 13, team 2: Hugh Penney, Bishnoi Prakash (Leading Seaman, Indian Navy), and Roshan Yengkhom took away photographs of the entrance eries to take them home (Brooks, S J et al. 2009 Mss 'Diary 2009.doc' Wednesday 11th).2009.02.12, trip 14: Henry Rockcliff, Neil Pacey and Polchung 'Chung' Kipgen (Indian Navy) … continued with the surveying and exploration of upstream side passages but did not reach a conclusion in a strongly drafting [draughting] crawl. More passage remaining, 143.53 m of passage surveyed (Brooks, S J et al. 2009 Mss 'Diary 2009.doc' Thursday 12th). 2009.02.15, trip 15: Robert Winkler, Biranchi Narayan Bhola (Leading Store Assistant, Indian Navy), and Bishnoi Prakash (Leading Seaman, Indian Navy) tried to find a way from Thapba Long Siem (Thapbalong Sim) to Krem Knai (sic!): Unfortunately the passage led after 40 m at a sump. But it is almost sure that this way leads towards Krem Knai. Another questionmark further downstream was followed for about 35 m until the team run out of time. This lead is not bad, a bit crawling around big boulders but seems to be just a bypass of the main passag. Another trip in this area would be good before the exploring is given up in this part of the cave (anonymous Winkler, Robert in: Brooks, S J et al. 2009 Mss 'Diary 2009.doc' Sunday 15th). 2009.02.15, trip 16: Steve Whitlock and Simon J. Brooks came down upon the cave … in order to finish off [sic!] some of the leads upstream close to the bolder choke. Having closed the leads close to the bolder choke at the lower levels, two leads higher up in the same fault remain open. One lead going south above the existing stream remains open with at least 150 or 200 m of passage requiring to be surveyed. One potential lead heads north but would to have be accessed by boldly rigging a traverse to gain access to a passage which would apear to offer an opportunity to go over the bolder choke. 241 m surveyed (Brooks, S J et al. 2009 Mss 'Diary 2009.doc' Sunday 15th). 2009.02.16, trip 17: Steve Whitlock, Pankaj Rai, and Karma Choki Bhutia … surveyed the lead above the stream heading south. [hich] After several dog legs and some straight passage closed down. On the way back to the entrance, the northern end of the cave was closely examined for any further leads, none were found (Brooks, S J et al. 2009 Mss 'Diary 2009.doc' Monday 16th). 2009.02.18, trip 18: Steve Whitlock, Neil Pacey, and Roshan Yengkhom … completed a survey of the remaining stream level lead at the northern end. The passage was surveyed until it became too small although a notable draft was still present (Brooks, S J et al. 2009 Mss 'Diary 2009.doc' Wednesday 18th). 2009.02.18, trip 19: Robert Winkler, Biranchi Narayan Bhola, and Sujan Shubba … completed the survey of the downstream passage. First, a narrow side passage at station 1.74 went to the main passage at station 1.80. Then they went to the southern end of the cave to station 1.102 (marked as 1.55) and reached the surface. Bhola went back outside. Sujan and Robert surveyed the stuff around the end. On the way back, Sujan found a new side assage (station about 1.70) behind a narrow crawl. This way is going on for about 100 m in a comfortable size (1 m wide, 2 m high) before it divides into two little passages, which were finally too narrow to pass. They went back to the pits and derigged the cave (Brooks, S J et al. 2009 Mss 'Diary 2009.doc' Wednesday 18th). Eine Blitzvermessungsstunde später machen wir uns weiter auf den Rückweg.2009.02.21, trip 20: Brian D. Kharpran Daly, Vikram Singh Kirola, and Bishnoi Prakash persuaded Win Pala, a Tangnub resident, … t show them a cave he knew of. The 10 m wide, sloping entrance of Krem Khongreng gave access to a wide and dry passage, but all too soon survey marks (tippex) were spotted. Vikram eventually recognised the cave as the bottom end of Shyngrong Shrieh and Thapba Long Siem (Brooks, S J et al. 2009 Mss 'Diary 2009.doc' Saturday 21st).
