Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 06/01/2018

A nice shaft entrance 1 m in diameter (Arbenz, T 2009.06.30 Mss) gives access to an initially estimated 8 m drop down onto a sloping floor (Anonymous 2009.02.03 Mss), later on bettered to yield an estimated 10 m pitch looks like it ends in [sic! gives access to] a gallery 1 m large (Brooks, S J et al. 2009.02 Mss -Diary 2009.doc- Tuesday 3rd February), and eventually turned into a round tubular 15 m shaft with short downsloping passage. Seasonal sink (Arbenz, T 2009.06.30 Mss: Krem Bam Masi / cow eating cave). ETYMOLOGY: According to Anonymous (2009.02.03 Mss: Krem Bam Masi / Cow Easting Cave) and Arbenz, T (2009.06.30 Mss: Krem Bam Masi / cow eating cave), no autochthonous, indigenous, or locally known cave name has been identified for this cave which was christened -Krem Bam Masi- or Cave Eat Cow (note 1). SITUATION: Unknown. POSITION 2009a: 25°16'36.7”N: 92°29'43.1”E: unidentified altitude (WGS84 modified from 25°16.611'N: 92°29.718'E unspecified geodetic datum, unidentifie precision error, anonymous recorder in: Anonymous 2009.02.03 Mss: Krem Bam Masi, unidentified Garmin GPS receiver). POSITION 2009b: 25°16'36.9”N: 92°29'43.8”E: 997 m asl (anonymous recorder in: Arbenz, T 2009.06.01 Mss: total 2009.xls; Arbenz, T 2009.06.30 Mss: Krem Bam Masi). POSITION 2009c: 25°16'39”N: 92°29'43”E: 1080 m asl (WGS84, Arbenz, T 2009.06.11 cave distribution map: Shnongrim Ridge). APPROACH 2009a: Drive along the motorable road from Tangnub [WGS84 N25°18'07”: E092°30'06”: 1145 m asl] towards Moopat [note 2]. At the -saddle- [note 3] about a couple of hundred metres from the end of the southern part of the Nongkhlieh Ridge, a Shaktiman track leads down the slope on the west (right). Drive down the track for about 100 m and past an electric post. Continue for a few metres and turn right (leaving the main track which leads to Umthe) to the end of [what had been in February 2009] a clearing. Ten metres into the jungle is the location of the vertical entrance, abut 1 m in diameter (Anonymous 2009.02.03 Mss: Krem Bam Masi). APPROACH 2009b: Drive along the motorable road from Tangnub towards Mupat. About 400 m from the southern End of Shnongrim Ridge (after “the col”) at a position near N25°29’28.0’’ / E092°30’.00.0’ take the Shaktiman track down towards Um Thé. Drive down the track for about 200 m, past the electric post. Take the footpath to NW leading down to the end of the clearing. 10 m into the jungle find the nice shaft entrance of 1 m diameter (Arbenz, T 2009.06.30 Mss: Krem Bam Masi) APPROACH 2009c: From … the cross of the road to Hummingbird [note 4] and … along the Shaktiman track which goes to Umthe cave and a place called Lum Phra Kilo [note 5]. 200 m below the electricity pylons and 20 m below the limit between the grazing ground and the bush (Brooks, S J et al. 2009.02 Mss -Diary 2009.doc- Tuesday 3rd February). The name of the hill Phra Kilo appears to represent a corrupted variant of one -Lum Phra ki Lyoh- (in short: Lum Phra k L'oh) or a Hill [of the] Eight Clouds (note 2) --almost as if it were a hint to eight -steam- or vapour-emitting pothole cave entrances. CAVE DESCRIPTION 2009a: A shaft, Krem Bam Masi. This 10 m pitch looks like it ends in a gallery 1 m large (Brooks, S J et al. 2009.02 Mss -Diary 2009.doc- Tuesday 3rd February). CAVE DESCRIPTION 2009b: Vertical entrance of 1 m diameter (approx). Probably 8 m deep and appears to sloping down the hill (Anonymous 2009.02.03 Mss: Krem Bam Masi). CAVE DESCRIPTION 2009c: The 15 m entrance pitch drops down into an 8 m long cave gallery and leads to a sink hole not large enough for a person to fit through (Arbenz, T 2009.06.30 Mss: Krem Bam Masi).ut 1 m in diameter (Anonymous 2009.02.03 Mss: Krem Bam Masi). Histoire

EXPLORATION HISTORY: 2009.02.03, trip 1: Lber 'Libar' Pala and Hawo Sutnga (two residents of Tangnub) guided Brian D. Kharpran Daly and Jean-Pierre Bartholeyns, who were in company with a team of Indian Navy sailors comprised of Biranchi Narayan Bhola (Leading Store Assistant), Karma Choki Bhutia (Leading Store Assistant), Pankaj Rai (Seaman 1st Class), and Sujan Shubba (Leading Seaman) to the cave entrance. Brooks, S J et al. (2009.02 Mss 'Diary 2009.doc' Tuesday 3rd) confirm that they … did surface recce. They stopped at the cross of the road to Hummingbird and whilst waiting for the other car, they met two local people. Continuing along the road on the right branch, the men directed them … [to the entrance of] a shaft, Krem Bam Masi. 2009.02.04, team 1, trip 2: Brian D. Kharpran Daly, Thomas Arbenz, Peter Ludwig, Polchung 'Chung' Kipgen (Indian Navy), Roshan Yengkhom (Medical Assistant, Indian Navy), Bishnoi Prakash (Leading Seaman, Indian Navy), and Henry Rockcliff … wre dropped off near Krem Bam Masi to get the GPS data (Brooks, S J et al. 2009.02 Mss 'Diary 2009.doc' Wednesday 4th). 2009.02.04, team 2, trip 3: Jean-Pierre Bartholeyns, Joanne 'Jo' Hardy and Vikram Singh Kirola (Leading Seaman, Indian Navy) … followed up and surveyed Krem Bam Masi found by the recce team yesterday. Jean-Pierre rigged the cave off of two trees after forgetting the bolts and drill bit. The 15 m entrance pitch dropped into a small 8 m long gallery and there it ended in a tiny sink hole which was not large enough for a person to fit through. Surveyed 29.5 m (Brooks, S J et al. 2009.02 Mss 'Diary 2009.doc' Wednesday 4th). Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 06/01/2018
