Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 06/01/2018

A cave entrance without specified shape, character or peculiarities, which has been reported to be in one way or another 7 m x 3.2 m high (sic! probabile qua: Up to 7 m wide and 3.2 m high), faces an unidentified direction and gives access to a tunnel cave, which contains a seasonally active stream cave passage that is interconnected with relic cave passages (note 1) and represents the lower reaches of Krem –>Wah Myntngam. Hence, it is a Salang Spring Cave on the one hand side but on the other also a Wah Myntngam Resurgence Cave. ETYMOLOGY: No autochthonous, indigenous or locally known cave name has been identified for the Salang Spring Cave, which is the resurgence of Krem Wah Myntngam. Henry Rockcliff (2009.02.17 Mss), however, preferred to think up the misleading and partly alienated Krem Salang Resurgence (sic!) as if this would sound more foreignish and were not a cave where water rises at Salang but a cave, which lies somewhere else and where water disappearing into a sink (insugence) at Salang would reappear (resurge). Derek (Derek Pettiglio) took up the same fettling style and introduced for the sole reason of introducing a New name for Krem Salang resurgence (Anonymous et al. 2010.03.29 Mss: Diary (current) 2010.doc) the so-called Krem Wah Myntgam Extensions --apparently in an attempt to arrive at Krem Wah Myntngam Extensions (note 2). The year before, Boycott, Antony 'Tony' (2008.02.16 Mss: Krem Umshua) had recorded the cave name Krem Umshua (note 3), which is obviously based on a corruption of the Khasi preposition -shuwa- and translates as first, before, previously, beforehand (SINGH, N 1906: 200), in connection with water from Sammasi [sic! qua: Samasi] comes out [of Salang Spring Cave], flows for 300 m [in the open air] and sinks again [into –>Salang Sink Cave] (note 4). So far (May 2010), I saw the Salang Spring Cave called and mis-nomed, spelled and mis-printed as Krem Salang (resurgence) Rockcliff (2009.02.17 Mss: Krem Salang, resurgence) KremSalang Resurgence Brooks (2009.06.07 Mss: Krem Salang Sink) Krem Umshua Boycott (2008.02.16 Mss: Krem Umshua) Krem Wah Myngam Ext Brooks, Simon J et al (2010.03.29 Mss: Survey summary.xls) Krem Wah Myntem Extensions Anonymous et al. (2010.03.29 Mss: Diary (current) 2010.doc: 10th February) Krem Wah Myntgam Extensions Anonymous et al. (2010.03.29 Mss: Diary (current) 2010.doc: 9th, 13th February) Krem Wah Myntngam Ext Brooks, Simon J et al (2010.03.29 Mss: Survey summary.xls) Wah Myntngam Extension Arbenz, T (2010.04.18 Mss: Pala Positions.xls). Upon enquiring if the cave, which had been called in February 2010 Krem Salang 1 and Krem Wah Mytngam Extensions or Krem Wah Myntngam Extension (etc) had been called the year before (February 2009) Krem Salang (resurgence) and Krem Salang Resurgence, it was Arbenz, T (2010.06..29 Mss -Re: ML 2010 Krem Salang- personal correspondence) who told me: Yes. Due to historical reasons, Krem Salang 1 was selected as an addition to Krem Wah Myntngam Extnsions. Only in 2010 it turned out that Krem Wah Myntngam has a cave entrance which -coincides with- [is the same as] the cave entrance to Krem Salang 1 (initially called Krem Salang Resurgence). [At the February 2010 stage of cave naming] Krem Salang 1 corresponds to the Krem Wah Myntngam Extensions, which are cave passages [generally 5 m vertically below the level of the tunnel cave passage between Krem Wah Myntngam and Salang Spring cave] of smaller dimensions, leading towards north-east, in addition to a cave passage off to the north-west (note 5). SITUATION: According to the GPS positions, which have been recorded by Henry Rockcliff with a relatively large precision error (assumed? ±17 m), the entrance to Salang Spring Cave lies at linear distances of a) 840 m approximately south-east (-580 m north, 605 m east) from the central road junction at the village of Umkyrpong (25°26'04”N: 92°34'47”E: 782 m) and b) 223 m ESE (-65.0 m north, +212.9 m east) from the entrance to Krem Wa Myntngam. According to the cave survey, the entrance to Salang Spring Cave lies 212 m in a direct line approximately ESE (-45.47 m north and +207.55 m east) from the cave entrance to Krem Wah Myntngam (WGS84 ±18 m N25°25'47.4”: E092°35'01.0”: 782 m asl, Rockcliff H 2009.02.17 GPS Garmin Geko 301). SITUATION 2009 (Brooks, S J et al. 2009 Mss: Diary 2009.doc): At an inexplicable location somewhere south-east of the village of Umkyrpong (note 6) and in an unidentified the river valley without recognised name. SITUATION 2008 (Boycott 2008.02.16 Mss: Krem Umshua): The so-called Umshua (um shuwa), where water from Sammasi [sic!] comes out [i.e. Salang Spring Cave], flows for 300 m and sinks again [i.e. Salang Sink Cave] lies at an approximate one hour walk (without orientation) in an unknown direction from Umkyrpong village. APPROACH: According to Henry Rockcliff (2009.02.17 Mss: Krem Salang resurgence), the entrance to this cave is exactly to be found anywhere beyond Krem Wah Myhtngam(i.e. Krem –>Wah Myntngam). To get to the cave entrance, Brooks (2009.06.07 Mss amendment to Rockcliff 2009.02.17 Mss: Krem Salang resurgence) suggests to go to Krem Wan Myntngam [note 7] and follow footpath for another 300 or 350 m [without direction: About 225 m in a direct line approximately ESE] to reach [a] seasonal streambed without identified name. Here, one is best advised to turn left without orientation to reach the sooner or later obvious entrance which faces an unspecified direction. Anonymous (2009.06.07 Mss: Krem Wah Myntngam …) suggests that: A further access [to Krem –>Wah Myntngam] is to cross [at a spot without identified GPS position] the [unidentified] stream bed and [to] follow [a] path to reach [the entrance to the Salang Spring Cave, partly alienated into] Krem Salang Resurgence (N25°25'45.3”: E092°35'08.6”) which is the exit [sic! qua: the only known resurgence cave entrance] of Krem Wah Myntngam. CAVE DESCRIPTION 2009: None (Rockcliff 2009.02.17 Mss: Krem alang resurgence) except left hand side in daylight combined with an unexplored wet lead at entrance (Brooks, undated 2009.06.07 Mss amendment to Rockcliff 2009.02.17 Mss: Krem Salang resurgence). CAVE DESCRIPTION 2010.02: Derek Pettiglio (in: Anonymous et al. 2010.03.29 Mss: Diary (current) 2010.doc: 9th February 2010) arrived at noticing approx. 150 m muddy stream passage with side leads still ongoing. Has upstream lead also and that's it. CAVE DESCRIPTION 2010.06: According to Arbenz, T (2010.06..29 Mss -Re: ML 2010 Krem Salang- personal correspondence), -Krem –>Wah Myntngam, the insurgence, has a cave entrance that -coincides with- (read: is) the cave entrance to Krem Salang 1 which itself was initially called Krem Salang Resurgence, while Krem Salang 1 -corresponds to- (read: is another name for) the Krem Wah Myntngam Extensions (note 8), which are cave passages of smaller dimensions, leading towards north-east, in addition to a cave passage off to the north-west. CULTURAL HISTORY: Rockcliff (2009.02.17 Mss -Krem Salang resurgence- description), literally quoted, believed to connect to Kren wah myhtNgam (sic!). History

EXPLORATION HISTORY: 2008.02.16: Wes Manar (then the Umkyrpong village headman) was interpreted to tell the part-time tourist guide Raplang Shangpliang, who had been leading the cavers Boycott, Antony 'Tony' and Jayne Stead, the word Umshua (more likely: um shuwa) in connection with what Boycott (2008.02.16 Mss: Krem Umshua) interpreted as water from Sammasi [sic!] comes out, flows for 300 m and sinks again but recorded Krem Umshua as if the stream course in the open air were a cave. Boycott Tony [Antony] (2008.02.16 Mss: Krem Umshua) confirmed that Jayne Stead, Tony Boycott with Raplang and Manas surface recce 16/2/08. Informant Wes Manar Headman, Umkyrpong. 2009.02.17, trip 1: An unidentified Village Headman (Umkyrpong village) without understood name (perhaps one Halding) guided Brian D. Kharpran Daly, Cdr. Vijay Chhikara (Commander, Indian Navy) and Henry Rockcliff (2009.02.17 Mss: Krem Salang, resurgence) to a cave entrance recorded as Krem Salang (resurgence). 2009.02.21, trp 2: Brooks, Simon J (2009.06.07 Mss amendment to Rockcliff, H 2009.02.17 Mss: Krem Salang resurgence), Robert Winkler, and Biranchi Narayan Bhola (Leading Store Assistant, Indian Navy) 21/2/2009 … revisit entrance, take photos and put two survey legs into wet lead - compass fogged up (note 9). 2010.02.09, trip 3: Derek Pettiglio along with Commander Vijay Chhikara (Indian Navy) and Vikrant (Vikrant Shukla, another guest soldier) turned up with the awkward expression Krem Wah Myntgam Extensions to increase confusion simply by introducing one more new name for Krem Salang resurgence and fully arrived in believing to have surveyed downstream for approx. 150 m muddy stream passage but quickly resorted to ignore each and every of all the side leads still ongoing (Anonymous et al. 2010.03.29 Mss: Diary (current) 2010.doc). 2010.02.10, trip 4: Derek Pettiglio along with Cdr. Vijay Chhikara (Commander, Indian Navy), today helped along by Ksan Kupar 'Ronnie' Mawlong and Melquire 'Mel'Laitphlang picked the newest cave name Krem Wah Myntem Extensions from plain air to excuse surveying down the main passage, but progress was slow due to the nature of the passages (Anonymous et al. 2010.03.29 Mss: Diary (current) 2010.doc). 2010.02.10, trip 5: Vikram Singh Kirola (Leading Seaman), Peter Ludwig, and Roger Galloway picked an even more newest cave name Krem Wah Mitingam (sic!) from plain air and tell everybody to have surveyed upstream / side passages, ended up connecting to a cave found last year called Krem Wah Mitingam, exited near to camp, collected Annie and went back into KWM and did the through trip (Anonymous et al. 2010.03.29 Mss: Diary (current) 2010.doc). 2010.02.13, trip 6: Roger Galloway along with Ksan Kupar 'Ronnie' Mawlong and Cdr. Vijay Chhikara (Commander, Indian Navy) fell back on the older newest cave name Krem Wah Myntgam Extensions and … completed surveying of all the leads in the cave (Anonymous et al. 2010.03.29 Mss: Diary (current) 2010.doc: 3 February 2010-02-12).
