Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 06/01/2018

Not only two unsurveyed sinkhole entrances, which lead to potholes (one interpreted as an estimated 25 m aven and the other as an estimated 15 m aven), but also a downstream entrance (about 7 m wide, 3 m high, facing north), which is more convenient for earthbound cave visitors, gives access to a cave which is peculiar insofar as it allowed expedition cavers not only to remember having experienced a case of combined started and ongoing (anonymous Brooks, S J 2012.06.23 undated Mss: Meghalaya 2012 Survey Summary Kopli.xls) but also the presence of unspecified speleothems, which were identified as calcite formations (Arbenz, T 2013.11.29 Mss ” 2013.11.29” Krem Lymke 19.2.2012 = Krem Lymke.doc). EVALUATION: A perennial stream cave and resurgence, draining parts of the northern tip of [an unspecified] the Daistong Ridge (Arbenz, T 2013.11.29 Mss ” 2013.11.29” Krem Lymke 19.2.2012). ETYMOLOGY: The origin and meaning of the apparently Synteng Khasi (Pnar) cave names Krem Lamyngka (anonymousArbenz, T et al. 2013.08.07 -Meghalaya expedition 2012 diary, Kopili team- 2012 Diary.doc: 9th February, Tuesday) and Krem Lymke (2013.08.07 Mss: Meghalaya Expedition 2013 Diary: 5th February), perhaps pronounced ”Krem Limke” (note 1) or ”Krem Lamke” (note 2), has not yet been identified. SITUATION: As far as known about 25 m or 30 m vertically above the orographically right (locally south-western) bank of the Um Pyoit (note 3) or Um Poit (2013.08.07 Mss: Meghalaya Expedition 2013 Diary: Sunday, 19th February 2012) and Um Pioyt Valley (anonymous Arbenz, T 2013.08.07 Mss: Meghalaya Expedition 2013 Diary: Tuesday, 5th February 2013). SETTING 2012: The lower cave entrance to Krem Lymke 851 m Tringham 2012 is indicated 30 m higher up near (±30 m) N25°22'28”: E092°34'48”: circa (±5 m) 880 m asl (Arbenz, T 2013.03.16 dated ”2012.04.30” cave distribution map Pala relief13 2.pdf). SETTING 2013: The lower cave entrance was under a low cliff at the head of a tributary seasonal creek on the W side of the Um Pyoit (Arbenz, T 2013.11.29 Mss ” 2013.11.29” Krem Lymke 19.2.2012). APPROACH 2012: Get your bonebag and all transported by a truck-sized cross-country vehicle along a road to the village of Khahnar and take what had been in February 2013 a relatively rough track west from a point just beyond the church and before the football pitch but follow this in a west-south-west direction for about 1.5 km to an open area on the side of the ridge overlooking the Um Pioyt [sic! qua: Um Pyoit] Valley. From here a short walk (1.5 km) down a spur passing some fine standing stone took the team to the valley and wonder how you ever might get anywhere close to the cave entrance (after anonymous Arbenz, T 2013.08.07 Mss: Meghalaya Expedition 2013 Diary). APPROACH 2013: From the saw mill in Samasi drive south on [what had been in 2012] a new black top road for about 300 mm after which it becomes a 4WD track. Follow the track to the south and contour the spurs of Pala and Larket. At the tp of the latter take a right turn and drive through the ford across the Um Pyoit. The track follows the SW bank of the Um Pyoit. Drive upstream to reach the cave entrance, which is only 20 m from [an unspecified point somewhere on] the track (Arbenz, T 2013.11.29 Mss ” 2013.11.29” Krem Lymke 19.2.2012).CAVE DESCRIPTION 2012a: Krem Lymke … is ongoing [as] a nice walking size resurgence cave (anonymous Arbenz, T et al. 2013.08.07 Diary 2012.doc: Sunday, 19th Feb 2012). CAVE DESCRIPTION 2012b: Ongoing (anonymous Brooks, S J 2012.06.23 undated Mss: Meghalaya 2012 Survey Summary Kopli.xls). CAVE DESCRIPTION 2013a: Forget about the first half of the cave. The remainder … included a section of walking size stream passage that entered a chamber with a side passage leading to a shaft to the surface. Beyond this, the cave started to degenerate, becoming smaller and wetter, reaching a chamber with and aven and bats after which a boulder choke was entered for some 25 m and the [easily visitable prt of the] cave closed (anonymous Arbenz, T 2013.08.07 Mss: Meghalaya Expedition 2013 Diary). CAVE DESCRIPTION 2013b: A square-shaped opening (2 m high, 5 m wide) under a cliff faces north and gives way to winding, stooping to an initially walking sized cave passage with mud banks and later to a canyon passage with a well decorated [more likely: speleothem decorated] high chamber. Whilst the canyon continues horizontally, a higher level way on leads through the chamber and down through a small keyhole opening to join the canyon again .Also in the chamber a climb leads to a 30 m daylight aven. Beyond the chamber, along the canyon the passage lowers to a wet crawl without draught. This leads to a boulder chamber and climb into a high, bat infested rift chamber. Beyond the boulder chamber the [cave] passages becomes again a low crawl that ends in [sic! qua: gives access to] a humid, unpleasant boulder choke (modified after Arbenz, T 2013.11.29 Mss ” 2013.11.29” Krem Lymke 19.2.2012). SPEEOMETRY 2012: Achievements of the 2012 Expedition include the surveying of Krem Lymke, which will be completed next year (OUR CORRESPONDENT 2012.03.01). SPELEOMETRY 2013: Ignoring not only unsurveyed boulder choke 20+m passage but also one aven to daylight +20 m in addition to an aven +20 m (Arbenz, T 2013.11.29 dated -10.8.2011- Lymkeplan.pdf) allows to arrive with a survey length of 183.21 m at a vertical range of 7.41 m (-0.77 / +6.64) (Arbenz, T 2013.11.29 Mss ” 2013.11.29” Krem Lymke 19.2.2012; Arbenz, T 2013.11.29 dated -10.8.2011- Lymkeplan.pdf). CAVE POTENTIAL 2013: The visitable part of the cave leads to boulder choke beyond which all of the unexplored cave continues in an unknown way. CAVE LIFE: Oana Chachula narrates having had on 5th February 2013 a … a quiq look in opposite direction, were is end with a high avn with a bat colony flying all around. … Under the bat colony, there is a lot of guano full covered with hundreds of “wood lices”. Never seen so many in one single place. We did not come back till the end of the camp, unfortunately (anonymous Arbenz, T 2013.08.07 Mss: Meghalaya Expedition 2013 Diary). Histoire

EXPLORATION HISTORY: 2012.02.09: Brian D. Kharpran Daly met the Khahnar village headman Lius Manar and the Secretary Mathias Dkhar. Over a cup of tea at the headman’s house Brian was able to elicit the names of a number of [eleven] caves, [namely] Krem Synkrang, Krem Lamynka, Krem Khla, Krem Rina, Krem Suna, Krem Chasuit, Krem U Man, Krem Labit, Krem Khadawso, Krem Madan Khah and Krem Sahsier (anonymous Arbenz, T et al. 2013.08.07 'Meghalaya expedition 2012 diary, Kopili team' 2012 Diary.doc: 9th February). 2012.02.19, trip 1: A certain Taplang (no surname mentioned) from the village of Larket guided Brian D Kharpran Daly, Thomas Arbenz, Mark E Tringham and Oana Chachula (note 4) on 19th Feb 2012 (Sunday) from Larket via Samasi to the Um Poit Valley (Um Pyoit) where they visited Krem Lymke, which was surveyed for about 10 legs and is ongoing [as] a nice walking size resurgence cave that is possibly getting bigger further in. Krem Liat Hati, said to be a “fish cave”, was a delusion[insofar as] it sumped after three metres. This was probably due to the mining shaft left abandoned and full of water, which was sunk into the cave passage only 30 m upstream of the entrance. On the way back Krem Rucha near Larket was visited and GPSed. It was found to be an inviting shaft with an initial 15 m pitch (anonymous Arbenz, T et al. 2013.08.07 Diary 2012.doc). 2013.02.05, trip 2: Oana Chachula and Simon J Brooks continued surveying up to a closure (Arbenz, T 2013.03.11 survey data file Krem Lymke_4.Text). 5th February 2013 (Tuesday) … Simon, Peter, Angi, Adi and Oana walked up to the top of the track whereupon Marissa, the MAA Tata 4WD truck, took them along the road to Khahnar Village, just beyond the church and before the football pitch. At rough track was taken to the left (west) and this was followed in a west-south-west direction for about 1.5 km to an open area on the side of the ridge overlooking Um Pioyt Valley. From here a short walk (1.5 km) down a spur passing soe fine standing stone took the team to the valley and the cave entrance (anonymous Arbenz, T 2013.08.07 Mss: Meghalaya Expedition 2013 Diary).
