UM IM CAVE 08

A cave entrance with unidentified shape unspecified, dimensions and unidentified peculiarities was understood to consists of a pothole represented by an approximately 63 m or 65 m deep (note 1) rift pot in karst approximately 2 x 1 1/2 [note 2] widening on way down (Sheen 2004.02.22 Mss: Um Im 0). ETYMOLOGY: No locally known name has been identified for this cave entrance, which Sheen (2004.02.22 Mss: Um Im 0) reported as Um Im ? 0 (Um Im Cave Zero) and corresponds to Um Im Cave 8. SITUATION: In an unidentified setting and at an unexplicable location somewhere near the village of Khaidong in the vicinity of the -Lost World Doline- and without identified elevation on the eastern flank of the Shnongrim Ridge. Sheen, R F (2004.02.22 Mss: Um Im 0) placed Krem Um Im ? 0 (sic!) at an estimated distance of approximately 300 m [note 4] N/E [note 5] of Um Im 1 by side of a major pathway in what had been in spring 2004 a clearing or -jingpynksan- (clearing) or -ram- (jungle cleared for cultivaton). APPROACH 2008.02.19: Sheen, R F (2008.02.19 Mss: Um Im 8) suggests to walk from 25°21'52.1-: 92°31'43.6”E (unidentified precision error, unspecified geodetic datum possibly WGS84) on a road (note 3) without distance (some 500 m) along a path (approximately SSW) to the cave entrance, which lies, in cases, either near 25°21'40.1”N: 92°31'38.8”E (Anonymous -A/T- in Sheen, R F 2004.02.22 Mss: Um Im 0) or, 22.4 m further west near 25°21'40.1”N: 92°31'38.0”E (Sheen, R F 2008.02.18). CAVE DESCRIPTION 2008.02.19: A 65 m deep pot by pathway drops in a clean-hang to mud floored … chambers [note 6] and well decorated grottos [sic!] without continuation (Sheen, R F 2008.02.19 Mss: Um Im 8). Brooks, S J (undated Mss amendment to Sheen, r f 2008.02.19 Mss: Um Im 8) points out that the pot (Sheen, R F 2008.02.19 Mss: Um Im 8) is a pot hole (sorry). CAVE DESCRIPTION 2008.02.19: 64 m shaft to a fossil passage where the draught was lost in a boulder choke (Brown, M W et al. 2008 Mss -Mghalaya 2008 diary- Monday 18th February). CAVE DESCRIPTION 2004: Both Brooks, S J (2004.04.16 Mss: Survey Summary 2004) and Brooks, S J (2004.05.11 revised Mss: Survey Summary 2004) count Um Im Cave 8 among the cave entrances of the Krem –>Liat Prah system. This is not the case (note 7). It is finished (Sheen, R F 2008.02.19 Mss: Um Im 8). SPELEOMETRY: Arbenz, T (2008.01.20 Mss) counted Um Im Cave 8 among the caves suspected to connect to Um Im 1 or Um Im 5 or Um Im 6 which are not surveyed or data missing. Brown, M W et al. (2008 Mss: Survey Summary) list 18.02.08; Shnongrim; Umim 8; team RS, GP, RM; 2008 survey 139.84; total 139.84; vertical 73.84 (probably metres). CAVE FICTION: At least one expedition caver had desired that Um Im Cave 08 … probably connects to to Um/Im Liat Prah Streamway in -Big Time- passage [note 8]. Could be blocked by flowstone barrier en route (Sheen, R F 2004.02.22 Mss: Um Im 0). CAVE CLIMATE: Reputed to emit steam in early morning (Sheen, R F 2004.02.22 Ms: Um Im 0). CAVE LIFE: Robin F. Sheen (2008.02.19 Mss: Um Im 8) draws the attention of gentlemen with a taste for pickling to several species of spider (Araneae: conf. Arachnida).ghalaya 2008 diary- Monday 18th February).
