The first Krem Siat Kriah or [Hunter's] Quarry Bag Cave is a blind (note 1), which was not only estimated to be 10 m deep (note 2) but also became too tight at around -15 m (JARRATT 2006: 6). ETYMOLOGY: The Khasi verb -siat- means to shoot, to infect (SINGH, N 1906: 202) and the noun -ka kriah- is a sieve, basket (SINGH, N 1906: 48). Both Anthony 'Tony' R. Jarratt (2005.03.06 Mss: Cave Log, vol. XII: 46, 22/2/05) and Graham Marshall (2005.02.23 Mss: Krem Siat Kriah 1) recorded to have understood -Krem Siat Prah- translates as Keep in Basket Cave. SITUATION 1 (Brooks, S J et al. 2005 Mss: Diary): At a location (note 3) supposedly reached by trending south from Krem Siaht Khriah 2 bearing slightly east 100 mtr [more likely: About 70 or 75 m in a direct line approximately ESE] to an decreasing gradient full of karst pimmacles. SITUATION 2: Marshall, Graham (2005.02.23 Mss: Krem Siat Kriah 1) elaborated effectivity to a degree attaining absurdity when explaining (note 4) in detail hw exactly to get there with (literally quoted): N,E 45° APProx. 500 Mtrs from old shoogrim village (note 5). SITUATION 3 (Anthony 'Tony' R Jarratt 2006.03.04: Cave Log, vol. XIII, 2006.02.08): … on a ridge below Shnongrim hill fort. SITUATION 4 (JARRATT 2006: 6): Somewhere in the Lum Manar area. CAVE DESCRIPTION 1 (Marshall 2005.02.23 Mss: Krem Siat Kriah 1), literally quoted: 10 m Pot.CAVE DESCRIPTION 2 (Jarratt 2005.03.06 Mss: Cave Log, vol. CAVE DESCRIPTION 4 (Brooks 2006.02.23 Mss amendments to Marshall 2005.02.23 Mss: Krem Siat Kriah 1): Blind rift pot. CAVE POTENTIAL: The prospects for extending parts of the knowledge on Krem Siat Krah 1 are reckoned to range between good (Marshall 2005.02.23 Mss) and nil / minimal –finished (Brooks 2006.02.23 Mss). The first Krem Siat Kriah or [Hunter's] Quarry Bag Cave is a blind (note 1), which was not only estimated to be 10 m deep (note 2) but also became too tight at around -15 m (JARRATT 2006: 6). Histoire

EXPLORATION HISTORY: 2005.02.22, trip 1: Evermore Sukhlain, young Shnongrim cowboy, showed the entrance to Anthony 'Tony' R Jarratt and Graham Marshall (2005.02.23 Mss: Krem Siat Kriah 1) but Anthony 'Tony' R. Jarratt (2005.03.06 Mss: Cave Log, vol. XII: 46, 22/2/05) says on this day he himself, Graham Marshall and Fraser E. Simpson … examined a doline [without recording GPS coordinates] and a short dig yielded nothing but a large grey slug. Another deep doline [again without coordinates] nearby was a dead loss but the arrival of two small, banana collecting boys, proved to be a godsend as the elder one, Evermore [note 6], showed us five caves [Krem Siaht Kriah 1, Krem Siaht Kriah 2, Krem Kya 1, Krem Kya 2, Krem Kya 3] and told us of several more. … we rewarded him for his trouble … [and] walked back up to Shnongrim accompanied by Evermore's herd of cows, his mother (?) and lots of stick wielding cow boys. 2005.02.23, trip 2: Graham went with Evermore to GPS the entrances fond the previous day (Brooks 2005: Mss Meghalaya Diary). 2006.02.08, trip 3: Graham Marshall, in company with Anthony 'Tony' R Jarratt (Arbenz, T 2006.05.21 Mss: Abstracts.xls) descended and 'finished' the cave (Brooks 2006.02.23 Mss amendments to Marshall 2005.02.23 Mss: Krem Siat Kriah 1) –of course without considering to attempt surveying properly. Jarratt (2006.03.04 Mss: Cave Log, vol. XIII: 8/2/06) narrates how Very hot weather made the walk down hard work and I was grateful to sit in the shade while Henry rigged and Neil dropped the 10 m deep Krem Siat Kriah 1 to reach a 4 m deep blind rift. JARRATT (2006: 6) confirms that Des, Neil, Henry and the writer commenced a long and frustrating session of 'pot bashing' in the Lum Manar area where Krem Siat Kriah 1 … became too tight at around 15 m. Brown et al. (2006): Wednesday 8th February -- J.Rat, Des, Neil and Henry went to Lum Manar hill fort, then dropped five shafts nearby (Krem Kya 1, 2 and 3, Krem Siat Kriah 1 and ) each ending in tight rifts after ca. 15 m depth.
