LYNGKSHAIT, Tongseng (Krem)

The Krem Lyngkshait near Tongseng (not to be confused with Krem –>Lyngkshait, Lumthari) was understood to represent a relatively large pothole / stream sink or large shaft (Chapman T 2001.02.16 Mss) with unidentified dimensions and an unspecified shape. The cave entrance was said to drain a seasonal stream (dry in February 2001) that falls into a closed depression (doline) and sinks into what was eventually found to represent a cave entrance to Krem–>Umthluh, Tongseng. ETYMOLOGY: There are many Khasi words with -lyng…- but no -lyngkshait- whilst the noun -ka kshait- (SINGH, N 1906: 49, 62; SINGH, N 1920: 173) or -ka kshaid- (SINGH, N 1906: 49; SINGH, N 1920: 586; BLAH, E 2007: 43, 44, 330) was not only translated as a waterfall (SINGH, N 1906: 49; BLAH, E 2007: 330) or water-fall (GURDON, P R T 1906: 162; SINGH, N 1920: 586) and fall (SINGH, N 1920: 173) but also as cascade (SINGH, N 1906: 49; SINGH, N 1920: 62; BLAH, E 2007: 43) and cataract (BLAH, E 2007: 44). SITUATION: On the eastrn side of the Shnongrim ridge and below Tongseng village (near N25°19'28-: E92°30'05” WGS84). To reach the cave entrance (note 1), follow a track downhill, turn left at a knoll (with an unidentified GPS position) short of monoliths (with an unidentified GPS position) and proceed (no distance mentioned) down (no direction mentioned) into a jungle valley. Follow a track till a relatively large shaft is reached (Chapman T 2001.02.16 Mss).rn side of the Shnongrim ridge and below Tongseng village (near N25°19'28-: E92°30'05” WGS84).
