Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 06/01/2018

A perennial stream cave (6 m wide and 4 m long) and apparent flood exsurgence, gives access to a sump (and diving spot?) with airspace, which is believed to take part of the summer (monsoon) Litang (Leteiñ, Litien) River course and to be, on the other hand, possibly fed by Krem –>Liat Sde. ETYMOLOGY: The Synteng (Khasi) noun-rynge- (Rud Suklain 2001.02.09) or -rngi- (Jarratt 2003.02.10) is said to mean Bamboo Cave but neither is listed in SINGH, N (1906: 172, 177) unless it stands for -ka ryngngi- meaning the sunny side of a place. TACKLE: Wetsuit and probably diving gear is required to explore the cave. SITUATION: A guide is necessary to find the cave as it lies at what was understood to be an inexplicable location somewhere (note 1) below the village of Daistong (without GPS positions) at the level of the Litang (Leteiñ, Litien) River flood plain flood plain. CULTURAL HISTORY - cave legend: There is a local legend of a snake with a light emitting diamond on its head (note 2). It taks this off when it comes out of the cave to hunt (Jarratt 2003.02.28 Mss -Krem Rngi / Krem Ryngi- 28/2/03; Jarratt 2003.02.20 Mss: Cave Log 2003, entry 10/2/03). Human use: Rush torches give evidence that the cave is either used to gather light emitting diamonds or, perhaps, even as a hunting ground for nice to eat bats. CAVE LIFE: Chiroptera (or not).s this off when it comes out of the cave to hunt (Jarratt 2003.02.28 Mss -Krem Rngi / Krem Ryngi- 28/2/03; Jarratt 2003.02.20 Mss: Cave Log 2003, entry 10/2/03). Human use: Rush torches give evidence that the cave is either used to gather light emitting diamonds or, perhaps, even as a hunting ground for nice to eat bats. CAVE LIFE: Chiroptera (or not).
