Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 06/01/2018

An unspecified cave entrance (unidentified shape, unidentified dimensions, unidentified orientation, unidentified characteristics), which appears to represent a seasonal sink and pothole, was understood to be one of two seasonal stream sinks (Brooks 2009.06.06 Mss: Gully Sink 1 and 2) which occupy one and the same space. ETYMOLOGY: No locally known cave name has been identified for what Henry Rockcliff identified on 19th February 2009 as a sink in a gully without identified name. Within a few months, Simon J. Brooks nicknamed Henry Rockcliff's nameless sink on 6th June 2009 Gully Sink 1 (Brooks 2009.06.06 Mss: Gully Sink 1 and 2): Made up name as caves situated in a gully (note 1). SITUATION 1: Not only in an inexplicable location falling on the Tangnub quadrangle (N25°18': E092°30' to N25°19': E092°31') and exactly the same spot as the second –>Gully Sink 2 (Brooks 2009.06.06 Mss: Gully Sink 1 and 2) but also without identified spatial relation to the other known cave entraces in the –>Um Muju area (note 2). APPROACH (modified after Brooks 2009.06.06 Mss: Gully Sink 1 and 2): From Tangnub village, follow a 4WD track descending west to paddy fields. Leave the track at a turn (N25°17'50.1”: E092°30'56.5”) to follow an allegedly nameless and obvious gully (unidentified) down onto the limestone. Some 20 or 30 m after reaching the limestone, there are two sinks, the first of which (1) is the deepest & more open. Both sinks have loose rock in vicinity of entrance. CAVE DESCRIPTION 1: One of altogether … nine new caves, all of them with vertical entrances under the big broken boulders. Most of them are drafting [sic! more likely: draughting] and oulook [sic!] of all the caves are good (Brooks, S J et al. 2009 Mss -Diary 2009.doc- Thursday 19th February). CAVE DESCRIPTION 2: Pitch 20 m plus deep heading under stream (Brooks 2009.06.06 Mss: Gully Sink 1 and 2). PROSPECTS: Good (Brooks 2009.06.06 Mss: Gully Sink 1 and 2). CAVE CLIMATE: On the one-hand side, tere is draught present (Brooks 2009.06.06 Mss -Gully Sink 1 and 2- cave description) and on the other hand there is draught / air movement present in sink 1 (Brooks 2009.06.06 Mss -Gully Sink 1 and 2- outlook).ere is draught present (Brooks 2009.06.06 Mss -Gully Sink 1 and 2- cave description) and on the other hand there is draught / air movement present in sink 1 (Brooks 2009.06.06 Mss -Gully Sink 1 and 2- outlook).

EXPLORATION HISTORY: 2009.02.19: Henry Rockcliff, Roshan Yengkhom (Medical Assistant, Indian Navy), and Polchung 'Chung' Kipgen (Indian Navy) walked down from the village of Tangnub and found previously ignored cave entrances, which they declared to represent nine new caves (Brooks, S J et al. 2009.02 Mss 'Diary 2009.doc' Thursday 19th).
