Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 06/01/2018

An initially 8 m deep hole in a rift (note 1) decided Jarratt to consist of a 10 m deep rift rift too tight (note 2) and Brooks as a blind rift pot (note 3) where JARRATT (2006: 6) noticed that it became too tight at around -15 m and JARRATT (2006: 20) observed a very interesting estimated length of 10 m at a guessed depth of 10 m. ETYMOLOGY: This cavelet was spontaneously named after a local tree (Jarratt 2005.03.06 Mss -Cave Log- 13: 46 entry 22/2/05), which must be the Khasi -ka dieng kya- or cotton tree, also semal (Hindi), shalmali (Sanskrit), etc. (note 4), botanically (Bombacea) Bombax malabaricum (IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 25: xxv) or Bombax ceiba (BAZELY 1992: 28). SITUATION 2005: In an inexplicable direction 10 mtrs [in an ] from Kya 3 in a depression circled by karst pinnacles … near path (Jarrett 2005.02.23 Mss: Krem Kya 1). SITUATION 2006: Not only at an unidentified location somewhere on a ridge below Shnongrim hill fort (Jarratt 2006.03.04 Mss -Cave Log- 13 entry 063/4) but also somewhere in an unspecified Lum Manar area (Brooks circa 2006.10.31 undated Mss amendments to Jarrett 2005.02.23 Mss: Krem Kya 1; JARRATT 2006: 6). CAVE DESCRIPTION 2005: C. 8 m deep rift near path (Jarrett 2005.02.23 Mss: Krem Kya 1). CAVE DESCRIPTION 2006: [Deleted: c. 8 m] 10 m blind rift pot ending in too tight rift (Brooks circa 2006.10.31 undated Mss amendments to Jarrett 2005.02.23 Mss: Krem Kya 1). PROSPECTS: In one way or another Minimal / nil. Finished (Brooks, S J circa 2006.10.31 undated Mss amendments to Jarrett 2005.02.23 Mss: Krem Kya 1).An initially 8 m deep hole in a rift (note 1) decided Jarratt to consist of a 10 m deep rift rift too tight (note 2) and Brooks as a blind rift pot (note 3) where JARRATT (2006: 6) noticed that it became too tight at around -15 m and JARRATT (2006: 20) observed a very interesting estimated length of 10 m at a guessed depth of 10 m. Histoire

EXPLORATION HISTORY: 2005.02.22, trip 1: Anthony 'Tony' R. Jarratt (2005.03.06 Mss 'Cave Log' 12: 46 entry 22/2/05), Graham Marshall and Fraser E. Simpson … examined a doline [without coordinates] and a short dig yielded nothing but a large grey slug. Another deep doline [again without coordinates] nearby was a dead loss but the arrival of two small, banana collecting boys, proved to be a godsend as the elder one, Evermore [note 4], showed us five caves [Krem Kya 1, Krem Kya 2, Krem Kya 3, Krem Siaht Kriah 1, Krem Siaht Kriah 2] and told us of several more. … we rewarded him for his trouble … [and] walked back up to Shnongrim accompanied by Evermore's herd of cows, his mother (?) and lots of stick wielding cow boys. 2005.02.23, trip 2: Graham went with Evermore to GPS the entrances found the previous day (Brooks, S J et al. 2005 Mss: Meghalaya Diary.doc). Jarratt (2006.03.04 Mss 'Cave Log' 13 entry 8/2/06): Neil lifelined me down the 10 m deep Krem Kya 1 to yet another to tight rift. 2006.02.08, trip 3: Jarratt (2006.02.08 Mss amendments to Anonymous = Simpson, Fraser 2005.02.23 Mss: Krem Kya 1) descended and finished (sic!) without even having commenced to start beginning. Brown et al. (2006 Mss): Wednesday 8th February -- J.Rat, Des, Neil and Henry went to Lum Manar hill fort, then dropped five shafts nearby (Krem Kya 1, 2 and 3, Krem Siat Kriah 1 and 2) each ending in tight rifts after ca. 15 m depth.
