Description
The first -Cave [of the] Jackal / Fox- is a flooded insurgence cave containing of a foul, stagnat pool (JARRATT 2006: 17) and hence was understood by sports cavers to represent a perennial (sic! obviously for: seasonal) stream cave that varies in estimated lengths ranging between more than 30 m (note 1), 20 m (note 2) and 50 m (note 3). ETYMOLOGY: The Khasi -u ksar- is a fox or jackal (note 4) while -ka ksiar- means gold (SINGH, N 1906: 49) and is a material used by dentists that inspired Jarratt (2003.02.28 Mss: & 2003.03.28 Mss) to translate -Krem Ksiar- into Mouth Cave (in Khasi: Krem Shyntur, Krem Jingkren, or Krem Jingsarong). Thomas Arbenz (note 5) made it clear this is a Cave of a Fox / Jackal, an animal with sort of golden coloured fur. SITUATION: Not only Jarratt (2003.02.10 Mss:) and Jarratt (2003.03.28 Mss: Ksar 1) but also Jarratt (2006.03.04 Mss -Cave Log- vol. 13: 27/2/06) places Krem Ksar simply downstream of Krem –>Khangbru, which itself lies at an unspecified locationsomewhere at the level of the Litang River's flood plain below the village of Daistong (N25°20'17”: E92°34'20” ±1 km, WGS84 modified from Everest 1830, Survey of India sheet 83-C/SE, Half-Inch Series, 1923 edition) on the Nongkhlieh Ridge. POSITIONS: It is unknowable what GPS receivers had displayed on 2003.02.10 when Anthony 'Tony' R Jarratt recorded without caring to notice precision errors at Krem Ksiar 1 the GPS positions N25°19.64': E92°33.86' GPS Magellan XL (DD°MM.MM' format) equalling N25°19'38.4”: E92°33'51.6” GPS Magellan XL (DD°MM'SS” format) or, 276.2 m approximately north-west, N25°19'44.3-: E92°33'44.2- GPS Garmin Etrex. CAVE DESCRIPTION 1 (Jarratt, A.R. 2003.02.10 Mss; Jarratt 2003.03.28 Mss: Ksar 1): A superb unroofed cave passage arrives from the large cave entrance to a 6 m wide and 3 m high tunnel with unpleasant, stagnant pool which continues for at least 20 m. CAVE DESCRIPTION 2 (Jarratt, A.R. 2006.03.04 Mss: Cave Log, vol. XIII: 27/2/06) 50 m long to a sump / bamboo jam and very unpleasant. CAVE DESCRIPTION 3 (JARRATT 2006: 17): A foul, stagnant pool, about 50 m long and jam-packed with rotting bamboo and logs and no place. A total of 172 m was surveyed including some unroofed passage [JARRATT 2006: 17] or 134.5 m (JARRATT 2006: 21). TACKLE: Wetsuit and buoancy aid or boat is necessary (Jarratt 2003.03.28 Mss: Ksar 1) or half a dinghy (JARRATT 2006: 17) though an under-water machete or motorized chain-saw may be more useful to get to the point where diving equipment is required. CAVE POTENTIAL - Outlook: Jarratt (2003.02.10 Mss:; Jarratt 2003.03.28 Mss: Ksar 1) opines Krem Ksiar (Krem Ksar) is perhaps a through cave to Krem –>Khangbru. Jarratt (2006.03.04 Mss: Cave Log, vol. XIII: 27/2/06) surmises We can now write this place off at last.somewhere at the level of the Litang River's flood plain below the village of Daistong (N25°20'17”: E92°34'20” ±1 km, WGS84 modified from Everest 1830, Survey of India sheet 83-C/SE, Half-Inch Series, 1923 edition) on the Nongkhlieh Ridge. Histoire
EXPLORATION HISTORY: 2001.02.09: Rud Suklain of Daistong village told the cave name Krem Ksar to Brian D. Kharpran Daly in company with Anthony 'Tony' R Jarratt, H. D. Gebauer and others. 2003.02.10, trip 1: Anthony 'Tony' R. Jarratt visited, accompanied and translated by Babha Kupar ‘Dale’ Mawlong and Bat Kupar 'Bat' Lyngwa, guided by Paheb 'Respected Father' Shor Pajuh, Hoi Mat Phyrngap and Gstar Sing (Singh?) Tongliang. 2006.02.17, trip 2: 'Yorkshire Dave' Hodgson 'explored' (entered), guided by Raplang Sukhlain and Menda Syih (pastor), accompanied up to the entrance by Brian D. Kharpran Daly, Sharkes Kharsyntiew (driver), Anthony 'Tony' R. Jarratt, Fraser E. Simpson and Imogen Furlong. Anthony 'Tony' R. Jarratt (2006.03.04 Mss: Cave Log, vol. XIII: 27/2/06): Just around the hill [from Krem –>Khangbru] the attractive unroofed cave passage (canyon) containing Krem Ksar 1, 2 and 3 was surveyed along with the caves. Dave valiantly explored all the three JARRATT (2006: 17) narrates how … the whole circus wandered round to the nearby sink cave, Krem Ksar 1 … jam-packed … and no place for the fragile vessel so Dave was inserted, as he was the only mug with a wetsuit. More hilarity followed as he fought his way to a sump some 50 m in.
