TYRNGE (Krem)

Description
An estimated 20 m deep collapse doline (estimated 30 by 20 m wide at surface) is characterised by vertical walls embracing a base covered with vegetation. The pothole is, as far as can be seen from the edge of it, developed entirely in sandstone and appears to be a collapse feature not associated with surface drainage. ETYMOLOGY: According to Chapman & Brooks (2000.02.20 Mss -Krem Tyrnge (type of tree)- dated 20|2|2000) Krem Tyrnge is named after a type of tree called Tyrnge that grows nearby. There seems to exist no Khasi tree named -dieng tynge- (SINGH, N 1906: 69) or a word like -tyrnge- (SINGH, N 1906: 241), only the noun -u tyrkhang- or a fern and the adjective -tyrkhong- meaning dried, withered (SINGH, N 1906: 240). SITUATION: Some 20 walking minutes (about a kilometre) approximately north-west from Umthe village (note 1) and above (the river) Wah Ryngo. To reach the doline, take a path to the approximate west-north-west (300°). In February 2000 the shaft was some 50 m inside jugle / forest. PROSPECTS: A hole (0.15 by 0.5 m) at the lowest point gives view of small passage. CAVE CLIMATE: Chapman & Brooks (2000.02.20 Mss) decided the absence of air currents and recorded No air draught was present on 20 February 2000.gle / forest. EXPLORATION HISTORY: 2000.02.20: Larsing Sukhlain guided Mark W. Brown, Katharina 'Kate' Janossy and Tom Chapman to the entrance of a Krem Tyrnge (or so). M. Brown lifelined while K. Janossy and T. Chapman descended and arrived at observing nothing characteristic or peculiar but anyhow subscribed to believe in having 'surveyed' the doline with the help of ladders —of course without producing a cave plan.
