Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 07/05/2016

A gravitational rift in sandstone with a 0.3 m thick marly band, developed parallel to a cliff running along the edge of a valley. ETYMOLOGY: The Khasi "pynshad" is the word for a dancing ground (note 1) as the Khasi "pyn" is a prefix of many causative verbs and the verb "shad" means »to dance« (SINGH, N 1906: 166, 188). SITUATION: About 2 km approximately south of Pynursla (N25°18'30”: E092°54'), near the north-western edge of the football ground at the side of the road towards Nongjri (N25°11'30”: E091°47'30”). CAVE DESCRIPTION (Uwe Kalmbach 30.10.1998): A pothole cave entrance to a 1 m wide and 12 m deep rift. Some 30 m from the entrance is a small chamber with a 5 m descent (ladder required) to a lower part leading after some 25 m in impenetrable collapse.

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 07/05/2016

NOTE 1: The Khasi verb "pynshad khawïang" means »to speak or behave as if intoxicated with liquor« and "pynshadkhun" mens »to dandle« but "pynshasuloi“ means »to have parade exercises, to drill« (SINGH, N 1906: 167). The Khasi noun "ka lympung" signifies »a place or enclosure where dancing is performed« (SINGH, N 1906: 124)
