NETTLE POT, Lumthymme (aa -)
25.372400,92.532300
Description
A rift, about a metre wide, which was interpreted as a seasonal swallet (note 1), emits warm, moist air, and drops about 35 m down to the top of an about 15 m shaft, which itself leads to a duck (2 cm airspace) and eventually pops up in Dry Lead 3 of Krem –>Liat Prah. ETYMOLOGY: No locally known name has been identified for what Mark W. Brown (2002.03.01 Mss: Syrnum / field name Nettle) nicknamed Syrnum / Nettle as it reminded him of the popular Nettlepot in the Hima Jingiaphet Thongkulai or Horse-Race-County, which the locals there call Derbyshire (UK). 2002 — Attempts to khasify -nettlepot- resulted in a stunted Syrnum (instead of a Synrem) with the alternative field name -- Nettle (resembles Nettlepot in Derbyshire) (Brown 2002.03.01 Mss). A little later, the initial Synrem was modified into a full Krem Synrem (Brown 2002.05.05 personal correspondence). Brown's initial -syrnum- was not only a waste but still is obvious rubbish (note 2) whilst the later -synrem- has nothing to do ith Derbyshire nettles (the stinging herb / edible vegetable; botanically Urticaria, in Khasi: ka theiñthap) as the caver's stunted -synrem- stands for a full Khasi -u dieng synrem- (note 3) and means the quite un-Derbyshirish nettle tree, botanically Dendrocnide sinuata (Jungh 1851: 29). 2007 — Robin F. Sheen and Barbara Anne am Ende (2007.02.12 Mss: Krem Ryngko Lumthymme) discovered by mistake the partly explored cave on their own. They add little but confusion by proposing to call this cave Krem Ryngko Lumthymme (note 4) without bothering to explain why and for what. In the same year it had been additionally recorded as -B6- or –>AA Cave -B 6- (Sheen 2007). Brooks, S J et al. (2007.03.01 Mss -Diary2007.doc- Monday 26th Feb) extinguish the no name B6 by replacing it with Krem Syrnum from 2002 when Mark B informed them [Sheen, Pacey and Janossy] that it was Krem Syrnum from 2002. Brooks, S J et al. (2007.03.01 Mss -Diary2007.doc- Tue 27th Feb) corrupt Synrem into Krem Symum (sic!).Brooks, S J et al. (2007.03.01 Mss: Survey Summary.xls) corrupt Synrem into Krem Syrnem (sic!).Anonymous (Janossy? Korsgaard? 2008.02.06 Mss -Krem Synrem ||ettlepot- dated 6/02/08) add nothing but confusion with explaining that the Krem Synrem Brown 2002 is the same cave as [deleted: Synrum] Syrnum Sheen 2007 when there exists no item or record of any -Syrnum Sheen 2007- --only one Krem Syrnum (Brown 2002.02.18) and one Krem Synrem (Brown 2002.05.05). Brooks (anonymous, undated amendment to Anonymous Janossy? Korsgaard? 2008.02.06 Mss -Krem Synrem ||ettlepot- dated 6/02/08) suggests to list just one record for a Krem Synrem when there are (at least) the three distinct -synrem- caves of Krem –>Dieng Synrem (Lymthymme), Krem –>Dieng Synrem (Shella: Mawlong) and Krem –>Wah Synrem at the village of Rana near the Nongjri in the Pynursla vicinity. Arbenz, T (2008.03.12 Mss: Vocabulary) tells me that the correct spelling (but wrong name) would be Krem Dieng Synrem as this means Nettle Shrub ave (note 5) but this cave is called after the Nettlepot in Derbyshire and has nothing to do with the nettle trees in Meghalaya. CAVE DESCRIPTION 1: Brown, M W (2002.03.01 Mss: Syrnum / Nettle) described the perennil (sic! for: seasonal) … stream sink into pothole ending in [sic! for: giving access to] duck as a 35 m deep entrance rift (one rebelay) lands on boulder floor, 4 m Ø [diameter]. A climb over boulders in the west corner leads to a squeeze onto the 2nd pitch head 15 m deep. A crawl through boulders leads to a 30 m long passage (choked) and a crawl to a draighting duck (2 cm air space). Warm wet air blows out of the cave (2002.02.18). CAVE DESCRIPTION 2: Sheen & Ende (2007.02.12 Mss) observed in the face of Krem Ryngko Lumthymme … Drainage to closed depression. Blows out warm steam. 2 second drop. CAVE DESCRIPTION 3: Brooks, S J et al. (2007.03.01 Mss -Diary2007.doc- Mon 26th Feb) mentions one B6 (see: AA Cave B6), which contains a previously bolted shaft (?) … 45+25m pitches and emerges after crawls, boulders etc … into a howling draughting small streamway. Other small squeezes in the fossil [sic! more likely: relic] section also draught, need digging. CAVE DESCRIPTION 4: Sheen, R. F. 2008.11.07 Mss: B 6 Sheen 2007 is Krem Syrnum) decides his -B6- (AA Cave -B 6- Sheen 2007) is identical with Krem Syrnum and remembers how this pot joins into the -Dry Lead 3- of [Krem] Liat Prah at a distinct four-way chamber easily identified on Michael Laumans 2002 survey (Ref sheet -3/-2, -4/-2). Our station number at this point was 1/41. No survey marks were found until stations 53, 54, and 55, which do correspond to existing survey marks in -Dry lead 3-. SPELEOMETRY: Arbenz, T (2008.01.20 Mss): Krem (Syrnum) contributed by March 2007 a survey length of 461,23 m to the Labit Cave System (Krem –>Liat Prah). According to Arbenz, Thomas (2008 Fieldbook: 22), this same Krem Dieng Synrem or Nettlepot is 43 m deep and contributes a survey length of 461 m to the Liat Prah System (Krem Liat Prah). TACKLE: Brown, M W (2002.02.18 Mss 1/03/02) recommends to take 50 m rope, hangers, maillons, 30 m rope while Sheen & Ende (2007.02.12 Mss), who have not entered, propose to use rope for 2 secon drop only. PROSPECTS 1: It is unknowable what Brown (2002.02.18 Mss) had in mind when he meant Continues for some (note 6). PROSPECTS 2: It is unknowable what Robin F. Sheen & Barbara am Ende (2007.02.12 Mss) had in mind when they meant Good – better than others in the area. PROSPECTS 3: Arbenz, T (2008 Mss -Fieldbook- page 11) wants the cave potential to be located and verified.CAVE CLIMATE: Brown (2002.03.01 Mss: Syrnum / Nettle) noticed on 18th February 2002 an outward airflow rising from the cave entrance and recorded Warm wet air blows out of the cave (18/02/02).2008.11.07 Mss: B 6 Sheen 2007 is Krem Syrnum) decides his -B6- (AA Cave -B 6- Sheen 2007) is identical with Krem Syrnum and remembers how this pot joins into the -Dry Lead 3- of [Krem] Liat Prah at a distinct four-way chamber easily identified on Michael Laumans 2002 survey (Ref sheet -3/-2, -4/-2). History
EXPLORATION HISTORY: 2002.02.18, trip 1: Mark W. Brown, Shelley A. Diengdoh and Annie U. Audsley descended what Brown (2002.03.01 Mss) decided to call Syrnum, field name -- Nettle (resembles Nettlepot in Derbyshire) and measured a depth of 45.32 m at a draughting duck (Brown 2002.05.05 personal correspondence). 2007.02.12, trip 2: Robin F. Sheen and Barbara Anne am Ende … went on a surface recce between Knee Wrecker Pots and the village of Lumthymme. They located 6 pots (Brooks, S J et al. 2007.03.01 Mss 'Diary2007.doc' Monday 12th Feb) including one item B6 (AA Cave B6 Sheen 2007) which they renamed Krem Ryngko Lumthymme and considered the 35 m deep entrance shaft a 2 seconds drop. 2007.02.26, trip 3: Robin F. Sheen, Neil Pacey and Katharina 'Kate' Janossy went into B6 [AA Cave 'B6' Sheen 2007] and found a previously bolted shaft (?) so descended it anyway, 45+25m pitches, and after crawls, boulders etc, it emerges into a howling draughting small streamway. Other small sqeezes in the fossil section also draught, need digging. Mark B informed them that it was Krem Syrnum from 2002, placed wrongly on the map (Brooks, S J 2007.03.01 Mss: Diary2007.doc). JARRATT & DAWSON (2007) confirm that the … supposedly new pot named B6 had been previously bolted when Robin, Neil and Kate dropped 45 and a 25 m pots … to a lot of awkward, draughting cave ending in a small streamway. They were informed that it was Krem Syrnum – partially explored in 2002 … 2007.02.27, trip 4: Robin F. Sheen, Katharina 'Kate' Janossy and Joe Duxbury went to Krem Symum [sic!] to continue the survey through some squalid canals before connecting to the Dry Lead 3 in Krem Liat Prah. Cave was de-rigged (Brooks, S J 2007.03.01 Mss: Diary2007.doc). According to JARRATT & DAWSON (2007), Robin, Joe and Kate pushed on in Krem Syrnum and got the thirteenth and final connection of the Expedition [February 2007 excursion] when they appropriately dropped into the old favourite Krem Liat Prah …
