Description
NOTE 1: One cannot expect a sports caver like Mark W. Brown to be aware of the pineapple karst occurring on the Shnongrim ridge —sort of diagonally checkered subsoil karren reminiscent of pineapple skin. What Brown (2006.02.10 Mss: Krem Paulus 1) probably attempted to refer to is pinnacle karst: »Tropical karst characterised by vertical rock blades fretted sharp by dissolution. It is practically indistinguishable from arête karst« (LOWE & WALTHAM 1995: 21).
The first (upper) of the two more pinnacled than fluted pothole cave entrances (Gebauer 1999.03.29) which Brown (2006.02.10 Mss: Krem Paulus 1) wanted to represent a »pineapple karst rift« (note 1). SITUATION 1 (Gebauer 1999.03.29): Near N25°18'44”: E092°29'37” (±135 m, WGS84): 1010 m asl (wobbly 4-channel GPS Garmin 4, Gebauer 1999.03.29) and about 300 m north-west (330°) of the church at the village of Lelad but some 20 m lower down. The entrance is geologically situated at the edge of the caprock (Kopili Shales) in the uppermost section of the limestone outcropping on the western flank of the Shnongrim Ridge. A second vertical entrance (see: Krem –>Paulus 2) lies at a slightly lower elevation. SITUATION 2: About 60 m in a direct line approximately further south-southwest of situation 1 but 75 vertical metre higher up and (Brown 2006.02.10 Mss) at an estimated distance of about 30 m on a bearing of 138° from a GPS position N25°18'43.0”: E092°29'37.2” (±8.2 m, WGS84): 1085 m asl (GPS Garmin 12, M.W. Brown 2006.02.10) and hence near N25°18'42.3”: E092°29'38.0” (±8.2 m WGS84, corrected from M.W. Brown 2006.02.10). CAVE DESCRIPTION: None. SPELEOMETRY: Arbenz, T (2009.06.01 Mss: total 2009.xls) lists a survey length of 40.06 m (21.02.2009) from Krem Paulus 1.
