Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 06/01/2018

An estimated 20 m by 8 m wide pothole without identified direction drops for an unidentified vertical distance down to an unspecified floor and appears to intersect a more or less horizontal cave passage of which one unidentified branch with an unidentified direction is an upstream with unidentified shape and dimensions while the corresponding other branch with an unidentified direction is a downstream with unidentified shape and dimensions (Audsley, A U 2010.02.17 Mss: Krem Yaje 17/2/10). Anonymous et al. (2010.03.29 Mss: Diary (current) 2010.doc: 17th February) count Krem Yaje but not –>Yaje 2 among five relatively new caves of unknown age, of which four have potential: Krem Yaje, Krem Moolier, Krem Lymmoh, Krem Lymoh and Krem Lymoh Pots. ETYMOLOGY: The origin and meaning of the reported cave name -Krem Yaje- has not yet been discovered but makes no sense unless it is read as a misinterpretation of the Khasi word -ia- (note 1) combined with a corruption of -jhieh- or -jhih-, soaked, wet (note 2). SITUATION: Arbenz, T (2010.03.31 cave distribution map: Pala_Ridge_4-10.pdf) indicates the locations of Krem Yaje Audsley 2010 748 m near N25°24'50”: E092°36'04- (WGS84) and Krem Yeji Hapka 2010 741 m near N25°24'56”: E092°36'15.5” (WGS84) above the locally south-west (orographically left) bank of the Kopili River and on an interfluve flanked in the north-west by one Wah Iji (N25°25'14”: E092°36'16” WGS84) and in the south-east by the western branch of the Phud Lymoh (N25°24'48”: E092°36'24” WGS84). APPROACH 2013.02.11, Monday: Thomas Arbenz and David -Cookie- Cooke best approached from the east to avoid the worst of the undergrowth (Arbenz, T in: anonymous Arbenz, T 2013.08.07 Mss: Meghalaya Expedition 2013 Diary: 11th February, Monday). POSITION 2010: Since the recorded GPS position (allegedly again ±9 m EPE) N 25 24 50.4 E 923605-7 is 15 m NW of cave entrance (Audsley, A U 2010.02.17 Mss: Krem Yaje 17/2/10) and the cave entrance itself is up to 20 m wie, the GPS position for the centre of the pothole lies between 6 m and 44 m in a direct line south-east of the recorded GPS position and hence near (20 m diameter + 9 m EPE = ±29 m) N25°24'49.8”: E092°36'06.3” (WGS84). POSITION 2013: The approximate (±30 m) entrance coordinates of N25o24’50.0” / E92o36’6.0” read from the map were accurate (Arbenz, T in: anonymous Arbenz, T 2013.08.07 Mss: Meghalaya Expedition 2013 Diary: 11th February, Monday). CAVE DESCRIPTION 2013: An estimated 8 m deep shaft in the base of an unspecified doline (unidentified shape, unidentified dimensions, unidentified characteristics), which can be climbed with a handline, intersects an active streamcave passage. The upstream branch is an aquaeous hands and knees across cobbles and relatively small gours [rimstone dams]. After some 25 m a duck is reached. The passage continues. The known part of the downstrean branch is an estimeted 10 m long tube … past a junction … to a tight corner which could be passable (rbenz, T in: anonymous Arbenz, T 2013.08.07 Mss: Meghalaya Expedition 2013 Diary: 11th February, Monday). CAVE CLIMATE: David -Cookie- Cooke noticed at an unspecified time on Monday, 11th February 2013 the vague impression of air flows, of which one was present and the other absent, namely no draught where the upstream branch continues, and a small draught where the downstream branch should be passable (Arbenz, T in: anonymous Arbenz, T 2013.08.07 Mss: Meghalaya Expedition 2013 Diary: 11th February, Monday). CAVE POTENTIAL -- prospects: The relatively small draught between the known cave entrance and the downstream branch of the known cave passage can be interpreted to indicate a nearby second cave entrance further downstream. The apparent presence of no draught in the upstream branch of the only known cave passage clearly indicates nothing except the obvious absence of an unobstructed nearby alternative cave entrance further upstream, which, however, may be sealed by a classical siphn full of water flooding a duck or sump.rbenz, T in: anonymous Arbenz, T 2013.08.07 Mss: Meghalaya Expedition 2013 Diary: 11th February, Monday). History

EXPLORATION HISTORY: The autochthonous cave name 'Krem Iajieh' or cave making damp, drenched, moist, saturated, soaked, soggy, sopping, wet clearly indicates that the aquaeous cave has been known since time immemorial to people familiar with the area. 2010.02.17, trip 1: A partly identified local guide called M. Sarti who lives in the Lymmoh Canyon area (Anonymous et al. 2010.03.29 Mss: Diary (current) 2010.doc: 17th February 2010), who became later a local guide M.Sarti from Kseh (Arbenz, T 2012.09.06 Mss 'Alys Mendus 22ndFeb.2010' Krem Lymoh (spelling : one “m” only) 17.2.2010) guided Melquire Laitphlang, Annie U. Audsley, Alys Mendus and Roger Galloway to relatively old five new caves of unknown age, of which four have potential. Krem Yaje, Krem Moolier, Krem Lymmoh, Krem Lymoh and Krem Lymoh Pots (Anonymous et al. 2010.03.29 Mss: Diary (current) 2010.doc). 2012.02.10, trip 2: Cdr. Vijay Chhikara, Khlur Mukhim and David 'Cookie' Cooke attempted on 10th Febuary 2012 (Friay) to relocated the cave entrance to Krem Yaje spotted in 2010 with the help of misread position and a GPS receiver. After a few false starts they found the cave they thought to be Krem Yaje - although by a different route as described in the 2010 record sheet. … On checking the coordinates carefully it seems a schoolboy error was made and entered as degrees and decimal minutes rather than degrees, minutes and seconds [note 3]. The cave is not Krem Yaje [and was christened –>Hobi Tojo Cave] … (anonymous Arbenz, T 2013.08.07 Diary 2012). 2013.02.11, trip 3: Thomas Arbenz and David 'Cookie' Cooke set up a party and made an expedition … to the end of the road to the foot bridge over Lymmoh Cannon. Krem Yaje was located first … After moving a few rocks in the bottom the upstream passage was explored by Cookie … Returning to the bottom of the pot, some 10 minutes of removing rocks gained the downstream passage … which should be passable (Arbenz, T in: anonymous Arbenz, T 2013.08.07 Ms: Meghalaya Expedition 2013 Diary: 11th February, Monday).
