Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 06/01/2018

A rift from surface commences as a vertical cave entrance, which is an estimated 5m x 1.5m Ø (without identified orientation) in size and gives access to a point where a shaft descends 10 m to a mud floor and intersects what is essentially a rift cave (Galloway 2010.02.11 Mss: Shaft 110 110). ETYMOLOGY: Among the nameless Umkyrpong Shafts … east of the village of Unkyrapong [sic!] (Anonymous et al. 2010.03.29 Mss: Diary (current) 2010.doc: 10th February), which may be identical with the nameless three further small cave entrances (Anonymous et al. 2010.03.29 Mss: Diary (current) 2010.doc) noticed on 9th February 2010, is the nameless Shaft 110 (Anonymous et al. 2010.03.29 Mss: Diary (current) 2010.doc: 10th February) that has been called Shaft 110 Arbenz, T (2010.04.18 Mss: Pala positions.xls); Anonymous et al. (2010.03.29 Mss: Diary (current) 2010.doc: 11th February); Arbenz, T (2012.07.20 undated Meghalaya cave record ”Shaft 110” in: XSObjectsPala.doc).Shaft 110 110 Galloway, R (201.02.11 Mss -Shaft 110 110- dated: II Feb 2010) Shaft 110 Galloway Arbenz, T (2010.03.31 cave distribution map: Pala_Ridge_4-10.pdf) Umkhyrpong 110 Brooks, S J et al (2010.03.29 Mss: Survey summary.xls). SITUATION: At an unspecified location (apparently somewhere in the catchment area of the Umkyrpong river basin) and without recognised spatial relations not only to AA Cave (Galloway 2010) 111 but to each and every cave entrance in the same vicinity (note 1). APPROACH: Galloway (2010.02.11 Mss: Shaft 110 110) commands to Follow the Shackti track [note 2] east from the village of Umkyrpone [note 3]. Just past the only [known] village viewpoint [without identified GPS position] take the left track [note 4] and continue east. After another fork [without identified GPS position] take the foot track heading east 30 m on the LHS [left-hand side without identified direction] the cave [entrance] is 20 m [without identified direction] from the path. CAVE DESCRIPTION 2010: An estimated 5 m by 1. m wide (without identified direction) vertical cave entrance gives access to a shaft descending 10 m to a mud floor. The cave is essentially a rift. Uphill [branch with unidentified direction] daylight can be seen through calcited rocks that block the passage [note 5]. [The] downhill [branch with unidentified direction consists of] a tight, free climbable shaft and 7 m descent to a crawl into the final chamber of approximately 2 m [in] diameter. There is a hole in the roof [ceiling? at an estimated distance of] 5 m above but it remains unknowable if these 5 m are above the eyes of the self centered onlooker or above the cave floor (Galloway, R 2010.02.11 Mss: Shaft 110 110). CAVE DESCRIPTION 2010: Rift from surface. Shaft 10 m, then horizontal along rift. Blocked both ways (Arbenz, T 2012.07.20 undated Mss ”Shaft 110” in: XSObjectsPala.doc). SPELEOMETRY: Gentlemen with a taste for long ones recorded 55.9 m 16.6 m Galloway, R (2010.02.11 Mss: Shaft 110 110) 55.9 m 16.6 m (distoX) Arenz, T (2012.07.20 undated Meghalaya cave record ”Shaft 110” in: XSObjectsPala.doc) 56.0 m 17.0 m Anonymous et al. Simpson … went to surface map the UmKrypong [sic! qua: Umkyrpong] river by camp … [and] … found another entrance further south with the sound of roaring water heard, which may go intro [sic!] Krem Denjam [sic! qua: Krem Dieng Jem]. Walking East, they also found three further small cave entrances (Anonymous et al. 2010.03.29 Mss: Diary (current) 2010.doc: 9th February). 2010.02.10, trip 2: Roger Galloway, Andrew 'Andy' Chapman, Peter Ludwig and David Cooke … went shaft bashing … on GPS points from 9/2/10. All locations concluded. Two shafts surveyed (Anonymous et al. 2010.03.29 Mss: Diary (current) 2010.doc: 10th February). Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 06/01/2018
