The sandstone is Upper Cretaceous and is known as the Phu Tok Formation.

Wat Pha Tok is a renowned forest wat founded in 1968 by Phra Ajan Chuan Kunchettho. The wat is famous for the wooden walkways that ascend the 150 m high outcrop of eolian sandstone in seven levels and took five years to build. These seven levels represent the seven levels of Buddhist enlightment.
