Description
A »cave« of dubious nature (possibly a modified natural rock shelter) of archaeological interest (note 1) contains a rock-cut inscription recording that one Sohanpal took Kurar (note 2) in the year Samhat 1345 (1288 AD). ETYMOLOGY: Siddha Gufa GOSH, A (1989, 2) Sidh-Gupha SILBERRAD, C A (1902: 131)Sidhgupha IMPERIAL GAZETTEER (1907-1909, 11: 246). SITUATION 1902: »Sidh-Gupha« is in the cliff under the fort at Deogarh (note 3) overlooking the Betwa (note 4) (SILBERRAD, C A 1902). SITUATION 1908: »Sidhgupha … In the cliff under the south wall of the fort …« (IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 11: 246). CULTURAL HISTORY: Raja Dhurmangad Singh (1794†) of Chauderi state in western Bundelkhand (note 5) retired with two or three men to »Sidh-Gupha« (SILBERRAD, C A 1902: 131 note 1).
NOTE 1: An unidentified author (no name mentioned) reports somewhere in the Indian Archaeology: A Review (1961-62) that Siddha Gufa is as a Lower Palaeolithic site (GOSH, A 1989, 2: Siddha Gufa).
