Tham Nar Tang [KA0468]
14.692224,98.533070
Location
From Ban Rai a rough track heads southwards, over a stream and up a hill. After about 1.5km from the village a path to the west leads into the forest and down into a small stream valley. Limestone forms the western flank of this valley and sandstone and shale the eastern side. Walk about 200m upstream to where the smaller seasonal valley enters from the limestone side. Tham Nar Tang is located in a small tower on the flank of this side.
Description
Two entrances wuickly join at a chamber with a flat, bedding plane roof and much rotting wood on teh floor. The passage off this meanders gently, past a slight enlargement and two small Buddha statues to a chamber and a third entrance. Climbing the boulders out of this entrance reaches a small doline, 20m in diameter and 5m deep. This provides the catchment for the seasonal stream through this section of the cave. From the third entrance chamber a slope up red, sandy soil sediments enters a low crawl. This reaches a roof rift, shortly after which the passage closes down over the sediment. However, an enlargement can be seen beyond the constriction and a slight draught enters here.
Hydrology and Geology
The cave is formed in a limestone conglomerate. A single bedding plane guides the roof.
