Description
The emergence cave of the ancestors of the Tangkhuls (BROWN, R 1870: 118) or the Marring (HODSON, T C 1911) or Maring (note 1). Compare –>Gulheopi Khul, where the ancestors of the Baite emerged. SITUATION 1870: »… at a place called Murringphy in the hills, about four days' journey north-east of the Munnipore valley [note 2]« (BROWN, R 1870). SITUATION 1911: »… in the Marring area« (HODSON, T C 1911 / 1989: 11) which may correspond to the »Meiring« positioned near N24°45': E094°22' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003) in Ukhrul district. CULTURAL HISTORY 1870 - cave legend: The ancestors of the Tangkhuls are said to have come »out of a cave at a place called Murringphy in the hills, about four days' journey north-east of the Munnipore valley. They placed a large stone on top of the hill [note 3] near this spot as a mark« (BROWN, R 1870: 118). CULTURAL HISTORY 1911 - cave legend: »An identical story is current among the Marrings and I have never met it among the Tangkhuls. Murringphy is in the Marring area … Dr. Brown [was]… misled« (HODSON, T C 1911 / 1989: 11).
NOTE 1: »Maring, dialect of Maring Naga/Maring, Maring Khoibu, Maring Narum-saibol people« (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manipur, accessed 2014.10.06, after »Mate Literature Society (MLS), the Mate Tribe Council (MTC) a Govt. of Manipur registered society Council and Laibul (Mate Primer by MLS (2001), Tuibuang, Maniput [sic!] (India.).« NOTE 2: "Munnipore" (BROWN, R 1870), a version of Manipur, is the name of the valley of the river Imphal, which gives its name to the modern capital of Manipur state. If »four days journey« covers a travelling distance of some 80 km and when one travels such approximate 80 km from Imphal (N24°48': E093°59') to the north-east, one can reach the vicinity of Ukhrul town (N25°10': E094°13') and the caves known as –>Khangkhui Mangsor which, according to SHARMA, A K (1996: 75), are said to be worshipped by »local tribals« who consider their forefathers' souls to ensconce in these caves. NOTE 3: Concerning the »marking stone« compare the Hole at –>Maikel, Mekrima, and consider a possibly misleading similarity -- the Manipuri people have a living megalithic culture.
