Location

Tham Nayn Noi is near Tham Pu Loop, beside the H201. It is on the southern side on the hill with the shrine and Buddha, about 100m back from the road. In February 2012 the vegetation had been cleared and the cave was clearly signed. Martin Ellis - 29/09/2019

Description

Martin Ellis - 29/09/2019

The cave starts with a steep and slippery descent which lands in a low passage with a rock and earth floor. After 12m one reaches, via a short ladder, the main passage which is a sloping rift. Many small pools of clear water are found in the lowest part (on the east) of the passage. After 40m of progress there is, at a depth of about 18m, a static sump with green water. The cave can be followed through a bat chamber to a short upper passage. On the APS visit in 1987 high carbon dioxide was recorded in several locations, including the highest reading recorded in Thailand (8.5%). However, in February 2012 the carbon dioxide was not noticeable. Possibly due to the guano an exceptionally extensive fauna was collected including two species previously unknown from caves in south-east Asia. Very high CO2 levels (8.5%) were recorded by the APS in 1987, but were not noticeable in 2012. There was still a population of water beetles in the pool in the bat chamber in 2012.
