Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 06/01/2018

A group of five man-made 'cave temples' (probably rock-cut chambers used for religious purposes) with cupules (cupola) are situated on the Aswastama (Aswastuma), a sacred hill near –>Dhauli (Dhowlee) in the valley of the river Dyah (Daya River): There are five caves in a row on the highest rock south of the elephant called by some -Panch-pandav- and by others -Panch-gosain.- Besides these caves (where there are traces of many others) there are numerous small holes like mortars [cupola], cut in the rock … Like cavities occur at the caves of Khandgiri; some larger than the rest have been used as reservoirs (KITTOE 1838b: 437 with location map on plate 21 opposite page 436).
