WARKHLA 1 (Krem)

An cave entrance without identified shape or dimensions, which is characterised by no noticed peculiarities, leads to the first cave called Krem [deleted: Wahrkhla] Warkhla. This is considered to represent a pothole (Jarratt 2006.02.11 Mss: Krem Warkhla 1) or a blind (Brooks 2006 undated Mss: Amendments to Jarratt 2006.02.11 Mss: Krem Warkhla 1) if not even a blind pot (Arbenz, T 2006.05.21 Mss: Abstracts.xls) as it drops to a blind floor (Jarratt 2006.03.04 Mss: Cave Log, vol. XIII: 14/2/06) at a choice of estimated or fabricated depths (note 1). Some visiting cavers admired this pot for its decorations which others, however, suspect to represent neither envy-envigorating flags nor medals or wreaths but secondary calcite deposits (speleothems). ETYMOLOGY: The Khasi adverb -war- translates as far behind, spaciously (SINGH, N 1906: 245) and the Synteng noun -ka khla- corresponds to the Khasi -ka khlaw- and is a jungle, a forest while the Khasi noun -u khla- is a tiger, a leopard (SINGH N 1906: 32). Both Jarratt (2006.02.11 Mss: Krem Warkhla 1 - Fallen Tiger Cave) and Jarratt (2006.03.04 Mss: Cave Log, vol. XIII: 11/2/06) confuse krem warkhla (Cave [of the] Far Forest) with -krem ur khla- (Cave [of the] Fallen Tiger] and arrive at a Fallen Tiger Cave without explaining how the wretched animal was seduced. SITUATION 1: Jarratt (2006.02.11 Mss: Krem Warkhla 1 …) puts the 1st Krem Warkhla in an unidentified spatial relation to the other caves called Krem Warkhla and in an unspecified location somewhere on the south slopes of Lum Manar. It does not help to be mislead to a point 4 m due east of a footpath [without GPS route] from Shnongrim to Kutsutiang when Kut Sutiang (N25°19'45”: E92°31'49”) itself lies on the next (south) spur of the Shnongrim Ridge and the way from Shnongrim (N25°21'09”: E92°31'05”) to Kut Sutiang bypasses Lum Manar.SITUATION 2: Brooks (undated 2006 Mss: Amendments to Jarratt 2006.02.11 Mss: Krem Warkhla 1 …) locates Krem Warkhla 1 in an intresting Wan Ruio [read: Wah Ralo] area of the map —apparently an attempt to refer to the Wah Ralo quadrangle (N25°20'-21': E92°31'-32') of the map Shnongrim Ridge (Arbenz, T 2006)— and adds confidence with placing at above GPS point (confusing a GPS position with a GPS point) when the relevant waypoint 159 was recorded with a carelessness not even arriving at a sensible name. SITUATION 3: According to the recorded GPS positions, the first Krem Warkhla lies 70 m in a direct line east by south of the second Krem Warkhla or 164 m east by south of the third Krem Warkhla. CAVE DESCRIPTION 1: Jarratt (2006.02.11 Mss: Krem Warkhla 1): No leads, blind pot, pretty chamber. CAVE DESCRIPTION 2: Brooks (2006 undated Mss amendment to Jarratt 2006.02.11 Mss: Krem Warkhla 1): Blind pot 19 m deep decends into a well decorated chamber (estimated 6 m by 8 m) with no way on. CAVE DESCRIPTION 3: Jarratt (2006.03.04 Mss: Cave Log, vol. XIII: 14/2/06): Henry Rockcliff reported the place to be attratively decorated but with no way on. Another cave finished. CAVE DESCRIPTION 4: ANONYMOUS (Brown et al. 2006) was told about a 19 m pitch into a calcited chamber with no leads. CAVE CONTENTS: Jarratt (2006.02.11 Mss: Krem Warkhla 1): Calcite and prityness. PROSPECTS 1: Jarratt (2006.02.11 Mss: Krem Warkhla 1): This looks like a good area if the so far mythical resurgence exists as it may just be the exit of the Krem Synrang Ngap southerly streamway PROSPECTS 2: Jarratt (2006.03.04 Mss: Cave Log, vol. XIII: 14/2/06) found in the jungle to the west below this pot a dry, karstified stream valley cutting back up towards Krem Syngrang Labbit. This area is worth a good look around sometime. PROSPECTS 3: Jarratt (2006.02.11 Mss: Krem Warkhla 1): None. PROSPECTS 4: Brooks (2006 undated Mss amendments to Jarratt 2006.02.11 Mss: Krem Warkhla 1): Nil.tively decorated but with no way on.
