Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 06/01/2018

An unspecified cave entrance (unidentified shape, unidentified dimensions, unidentified orientation, unidentified characteristics) is said to give access to Krem Um (a resurgence) (Anonymous 2012.03.10 Mss: Meghalaya 2012 Team 2 Diary, entry for Sunday 19th February 2012). ETYMOLOGY: No autochthonous, indigenous or locally known name has been identified -- if it exists -- for what people familiar with the area classified as a -krem um- (Khasi) or stream cave (English). The recorded place name Jylliang village (Anonymous 2012.03.10 Mss: Meghalaya 2012 Team 2 Diary) or -Shnong Jylliang- (Khasi) makes no sense (note 1). SITUATION: In an unknown setting (note 2) -- probably in the Umngi (Um Ngi) river basin -- and in an unidentified location (note 3), which was understood to lie at an estimated walking distance of just over an hour to the North East from a certain Jyllang Village (note 4) and not only somewhere above a possibly off-hand created tributary valley (The Remblang Area) -- whic flows in an unidentified direction to join an unidentified bank of an unidentified river -- but also in unidentified spatial relations to the other three known cave entrances in the same vicinity, namely Krem –>Blang a.k.a Remblang; Krem –>Dum, and Krem –>Um, Jylliang No. 2, the sink. POSITION: The GPS position near (allegedly ±10 m) N25°12'20.9”: E091°29'01.6”: 39 m asl (WGS84, unidentified recorder, undated 2012.02.19) recorded for the entrance to the so-called Krem Um Resurgence with a Garman 12 GPS (sic!) is 25 m from the cave [entrance] to the GPS Point on a bearing of 230 (Brooks, Simon J 2012.08.09 -Mawsynram GPS - Locations Part 1- personal correspondence). If I understand this properly, but I am not shure at all, a) the GPS position is 25 m on a bearing of 230° from the entrance to this cave b) and the cave entrance 25 m on a bearing of 050- from the GPS position c) the cave entrance lies 19.15 m north and 16.07 m east from the GPS position d) and near N25°12'21.5”: E01°29'02.2” (WGS84, modified after Brooks, S J 2012.08.09 -Mawsynram GPS - Locations Part 1- personal correspondence). flows in an unidentified direction to join an unidentified bank of an unidentified river -- but also in unidentified spatial relations to the other three known cave entrances in the same vicinity, namely Krem –>Blang a.k.a Remblang; Krem –>Dum, and Krem –>Um, Jylliang No. 2, the sink. Histoire

EXPLORATION HISTORY: 2012.02.19: After breakfast in a certain Dangar Village (or so), the three drivers Kyrshan Thabah, Bolk Syntiew, and Devel Mawlong drove not only the two guides PlantonIawrod (or so) and Harel Syiemleh (both from an unidentified populated place) and the two police officers Martin Marak and Sylvester Pataw (Meghalaya Police) but also the February 2012 whole team (note 4) along some very rough roads and tracks … via Charikata Village to Jyllang Village. Here they walk for just over an hour to the North East of the village to reach a tributary valley (The Remblang Area) (Anonymous 2012.03.10 Mss: Meghalaya 2012 Team 2 Diary). Only then, at least some of the outsiders by and by became aware that the interesting tributary valley (The Remblang Area) had been, of course, very well known to all the people, which were familiar with the area, to contain four caves, [namely] Krem Um (a resurgence), Krem Blang, (a.k.a. Krem Remblang) a relic cave, Krem Dom [sic! qua: Krem –>Dm, Jylliang] another relic cave and above a dry waterfall, Krem Um Sink which may connect to Krem Um (Anonymous 2012.03.10 Mss: Meghalaya 2012 Team 2 Diary). 2012.02.19, trip 1, Georg Bäumler, Samira Zareei, and Jean-Pierre Bartholeyns: Georg, Samira and Jean-Pierre explore and survey (94,18m in the Krem Um Resurgence (Anonymous 2012.03.10 Mss: Meghalaya 2012 Team 2 Diary).
