Description
A clean (Sheen 2005.02.17 Mss) or calcite lined (Jarratt 2005.03.06 Mss) shaft, approximately 3 m in diameter, drops along a lateral glittering aven (Jarratt 2005.03.06 Mss) to a choice of depths ranging from 10 m to 55 m (note 1). SITUATION: At an unexplainable location somewhere on the Shnongrim ridge (Brooks 2005.02.15 Mss: Um Im; Jarratt 2005.03.06 Mss -Cave Log- vol. XII; Sheen 2005.02.17 Mss: Um Im 12; Sheen 2005.08.20 Mss). APPROACH 2005.02.15: Just like the approch to –>Um Im Cave 05 because the cave entrances of all the Um Im Caves 2-12 … are very close [to the entrance of Um Im Cave 05] & the best approach is to walk to Um Im 6 / 2-5 (Lost World) first (Brooks, S J 2005.02.15 Mss: Um Im 5 (Shnongrim) 15-2-2005). APPROACH 2005.08.20: From the path 140 m south-east of the Lost World Doline, walk downhill in an easterly direction for about 300 m to waystation -near- (±14 m) N 25 21 30.6 E 092 31 35.3 GWS 84 [sic! CAVE DESCRIPTION 2005.02.16: A calcite lined 35 m pitch (Jarratt, A R 2005.03.06 Mss -Cave Log- vol. XII, 16/2/05). CAVE DESCRIPTION 2005.02.17: A clean shaft, approximately 3 m in diameter, drops about estimated 50 m. See Brian Cotters description (Sheen, R F 2005.02.17 Mss: Um Im 12). EXPLORATION HISTORY: 2005.02.08, trip 1: Robin F. Sheen and Christian Fischer noticed the entrance. 2005.02.16, trip 2: Brian McCoitir rigged and descended the first 30 m or so (Anthony 'Tony' R. Jarratt 2005.03.06 Mss: Cave Log, vol. XII, 16/2/05). 2005.02.17, trip 3: Brian McCoitir and Anthony 'Tony' R Jarratt descended, explored and 'surveyed' (Sheen, Robin F 2005.08.20) to a degree yielding lengthwise measured metres. Anthony 'Tony' R. Jarratt (2005.03.06 Mss: Cave Log, vol. XII, 16/2/05) explains: A hearty drinking night … After a late start I followed Brian down the 28 m Frog Pot, surveying as we went. Brian rigged the next 14 m pot to reach a mud floor and short climb up. To surmount this, I abseiled down and he pulled me over to reach the top by pendulum technique. A drop down beyond led to another short climb up into a glittering calcite contend aven with no passable way on. The total survey length was 67.18 m but on the way out I spotted a possible passage ona ledge a few metres down from the entrance. I went out while Brian checked this whilst de-rigging to find another pitch. He rigged and descended this to find himself in the glittering calcite aven found earlier so he later estimated a survey leg for the pitch of 30 m. He also worked hard to de-rig the cave while I sat at the entrance trying to light a fire to drive off the mosquitos and being entertained by a squirrel and a bat. BYRON (1813: Bride of Abydos) adds: And oft around the cavern fire / On visionary schemes debate / To snatch the Rayahs [note 2] from their fate.
