Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 06/01/2018

An estimated 8 m by 12 m wide sinkhole (FOWLER et al. 2004) or doline (closed depression) appears to give access to an undecended pothole. This was declared to be of low potential (Zawada 2004.04.21 personal correspondence).ETYMOLOGY: No locally known name, if it exists, has been identified for what was christened Banana Tree Sink though the short-lived banana plant (Musacea var., in Khasi -u kait-) is not a tree but a shrub. The US American engineering geologist's -sink- is a term applied all kinds of closed depressions. SITUATION: At an unknown location somewhere on Lum Iawpaw, the hill above Nongnah (schoolhouse 25°15'56.8”N: 91°19'32.9”E: 1017.9 m, unidentified precision error, Scott Linn, undated December 2002, GPS Garmin Etrex). This Banana Tree Sink lies at an unknown distance east of the trail to Phud Khongpong (Zawada 2004.04.21 personal correspondence, 2004.04.24 personal correspondence) of which, however, the cave entrance coordinates were misplaced. An estimated 8 m by 12 m wide sinkhole (FOWLER et al. 2004) or doline (closed depression) appears to give access to an undecended pothole. Histoire

EXPLORATION HISTORY: 2002.12.12: Romoland Paliar (Nongnah Village Headman) and others guided members of an USA caving team (note 1) to what was christened Banana Tree Sink (FOWLER et al. 2004: 263). They were not inspired (Zawada 2004.04.21 personal correspondence). Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 06/01/2018
