A natural troglodyte hermitage cave or rock shelter associated XUANZANG (648 for 629-645) with a stone pillar in a forest east of a certain Mo-ha river (note 1):SITUATION 1 (XUANZANG 648 for 629-645): East of a certain Moha Ho (river). SITUATION 2 (JULIEN 1853): East of a certain Mahi river. SITUATION 3 (CUNNINGHAM 1871): East of the Mohana Nadi (note 2). SITUATION 4 (WATTERS 1905 edited 1988, 2: 143): East of a certain Maha Nadi. CULTURAL HISTORY - religious folklore: »It was here that the Tirthika Yü-t'ou-lan Tzu —that is, Udra-rama-putra) [note 3]—went into Samadhi …« (XUANZANG 648 for 629-645 in WATTERS 1905 edited 1988, 2: 141).

NOTE 1: WATTERS (1905 edited 1988, 2: 143): »The river which Yuan-chuang in this passage says he crossed, going east from the Bodhi Tree district [Bodhgaya area, Gaya district], is called by him Mo-ha. Julien [JULIEN 1853] turns this into Mahi, and Cunningham [CUNNINGHAM 1871] calls the river the Mohana Nadi. But the Chinese Moha cannot be for Mahi, and it is possible it may be for the Sanskrit maha, great or large, and moha ho may be either a proper name or simply "a large river". We have a maha ho here in Magadha, and in Chuan XI we have one in the Malwa Country.« NOTE 2: »Mohana Nadi« (CUNNINGHAM 1871) or »Mohana Nadi« N24°43': E085°00' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003) falls on AMS sheet NG45-13 and is indicated as the »Mohana« in the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 58 D1).NOTE 3: WATTERS (1905 edited 1988, 2: 142): »… Uddo (or Udra) Rama-putra, but another form of the name, viz. Udraka, is given by our pilgrim in his translations. Then we have also the forms Rudra and Rudraka with Rama-putra added. The word udra denotes an otter and I-Ching translates it in this name by Shui-t'a or "Water otter". But the uddo or udra does not live in the water, he lives in the jungle, and hunts its prey on land and in water. Then Rudra or rudraka means fierce and terrible, and so we find Rudraka Rama-putra rendered by Mêng-hsi-tzu or "the fierce son of joy". This Udra or Rudra was, we know, a great religious teacher living in a hermitage near Rajagaha [Rajgir] at the time when Siddharta left home to enter his career.«
