The hot spring or celebrated hot well [note 1] (HEBER, R 1829b, 1: 200-201), which lies about 5 km in a direct line east of Munger or Monghyr (note 2), are found in a setting where the hills are hornstone and quartz, stratified and dipping southerly with a very high angle; they are very barren, … skirting the granite and gneiss range of Paras-nath. … Like every other part of the surface of India, it has suffered much from denudation, especially on the above-named mountains, and around their bases, where various rocks protrude through it. Along the Ganges again, its surface is an unbroken level between Chunar and the rocks of Monghyr. The origin of its component mineral matter must be sought in the denudation of the Himalayas within a very recent geological period. The contrast between the fertility of the alluvium and the sterility of the protruded quartzy rocks is very striking, cultivation running up to these fields of stones, and suddenly stopping (HOOKER, J D 1854-1855, 1: 87-88)Bshop Heber, however, understood not only that the water rises from a -limish ground- (note 3) and all the hills seem to be of limestone in a state of considerable decomposition (HEBER 1829b, 1: 201) but also that the landscape features rather antic shapes (note 4). SITUATION 1775: 1 indische Meile vom Ganges und 2 1/2 O. S. östlich von Mongher (BERNOULLI 1785: 307 after Tiefenthaler, ca. 1775: Descriptio Indiae). SITUATION 1829: In a pretty garden that lies a little to the east of Monghyr (HEBER 1829) and above the orographically right (locally south-western) bank of the Ganges River (note 5)SPRING DESCRIPTION 1775:Sithacund … Vorzüglich merkwürdig aber ist eine heisse Quelle, die man fast einen kleinen Teich nennen kann … . Nahe dabey sind 4 andere kleine Teiche mit kaltem Wasser. Jener aber ist mit einer Mauer umgeben und von sonderbarer Beschaffenheit. Das aus dem innersten herausquellende Wasser ist so brennend heiß, daß man keine Hand darin halten kann, sonder sie sogleich wieder zurückziehen muß; es schmeckt weder nach Schwefel noch irgend einem Metall, sondern es ist so süß und wohlschmeckend wie Brunnenwasser. Seitwärts ist eine gemauerte Rinne, ohngefähr 3 Spannen breit, durch welche das heisse Wasser aufs Feld und in einem nahe da befindlichen Sumpf fließt. Auch ist soviel gewiß, daß dieses Wasser aus einem leimichten Boden, aus welchem man auch Wasserblasen aufsteigen sieht, hervorquillt … [note 6]. Der Boden umher ist eben und mit vielen Bäumen besetzt. Die Hügel liegen eine halbe Meile davon; die Berge weiter, an anderthalb Meilen (BERNOULLI 1785: 307 after Tiefenthaler, ca. 1775: Dscriptio Indiae). SPRING DESCRIPTION 1848, April 2nd: Unlike the Soorujkoond hot-springs, those of Seetakoond rise in a plain, and were once covered by a handsome temple. All the water is collected in a tank, some yards square, with steps leading down to it. The water, which is clear and tasteless (temp. 104 degrees), is so pure as to be exported copiously, and the Monghyr manufactory of soda-water presents the anomaly of owing its purity to Seeta's ablutions (HOOKER, J D 1854-1855, 1: 88). CAVE POTENTIAL: The catchment area of the waters issuing from the Sita Kund at Munger is not known to me but if the hot spring can be entered and is penetrable, then it is, perhaps, a relatively challenging diving spot.Sithacund … Vorzüglich merkwürdig aber ist eine heisse Quelle, die man fast einen kleinen Teich nennen kann … .
