Huge masses of angular blocks of rock which form capacious caves, where fifty or sixty people might rest reports COLEBROOKE (1827: 353 after Alexander Gerard (July 1821) from somewhere on the route along the dell of the Tidung. This item is possibly identical with the –>Lalanti Caves. SITUATION: This river Tidung (note 1) is not exactly tracked down but COLEBROOKE (1827: 352) explains the travellers [i.e. Captain Alexander Gerard and Dr. James Gilbert Gerard] followed the course of the Nangalti river [note 2], to its junction with the Tidúng, and explored the valley of this last-mentioned river, ascending to the village of Charang [note 3] at 12,000 feet [3660 m asl], amidst mountains 18,000 feet [5'500 m] high; and proceeding thence to Thangi [note 4], and afterwards to the confluence of the same river with the Setlej [Sutlej]. The principal branch, retaining the name of Tidúng, flows from the E.S.E. [east-southeast], having its source in Chinese Tartary (Zanskar and Ladakh distric: Jammu & Kashmir State).: Jammu & Kashmir State).
