Description
The rock cut temple of Ranachandi stands on a boulder in the river Mahur near a railway bridge. It is carved out of a rock that is about thirty metres in circumference [9.5 m in diameter] at the base. It was discovered in 1912 by two engineers who were supervising the construction of this remarkable railway. It is called 'ek pathar ghar' or house carved out of one rock (BHATTACHARJI, R 2002: 70). SITUATION: The railway line (Meter Gauge) from west of Lumding (N25°45': E093°10') off towards south is shown on AMS sheet NG46-11 Kohima (U502 series, 1956 edition) and on the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006) map 46 D4) to cross the Mahur River near N25°14': E93°10' about about 15 km in a direct line east-northeast from Haflong (N25°11': E93°02').
