CHEHEL DOKHTARAN, Qadis 1 (Cave of the)

Two cave entrances in calcareous sandstone above a rhéocène spring (note 1) give access to a rift cave (note 2). SITUATION: At an unspecified distance of 7 km or 8 km (rather along a road than in a direct line) in an unspecified direction from Qadis (note 3). The entrance to this rift cave was said to lie in the (northern?) flank of a hill called Montagne des Quarante Fils (LINDBERG 1961a: 16) or -Cave of the Forty Sons-. CAVE DESCRIPTION: The main entrance gives access to a fissure (about a metre wide, 6 m or 7 m high, and 5 m long) with two ways on. The first lead, near the floor, ends but the other lead, which is higher up and about 5 m long, continues to a second cave entrance. A third rift cave passage is found on the right-hand side of the latter. Step-holes and hand-holds, excavated to ease climbing up, indicate that the cave is, at least in parts, modified by man. Not a single bit of this rift system is truly dark. A temperature of 25°C in the air was measured at the entrance n 1st July 1959.n 1st July 1959.
