Kermit Cave (Aa)

Description
A fine example of effective cavism is found in absurd observations concerning a pothole cave (note 1) situated about halfway (keyword: missing link) between Krem –>Wah Ryngo and Krem –>Khongreng and at the foot of the western flank of the southern Shnongrim - Tangnub ridge. Rhys Williams (2001.02.05 Mss: Krem Kermit) exhibits having understood that the known parts of this cave consist of a pothole entering maze area with fossil phreatics [note 3] and leading to downward trending rifts. Takes water when river outside flowing. ETYMOLOGY: No autochthonous, indigenous or locally known name has been identified for what Mark W. Brown, Peter Ludwig, Amanda Edgeworth and Rhys Williams christened Kermit Cave (note 2) in honour of their TV watching experience (Williams, R 2001.02.05 Mss). SITUATION: From ridge track N25°15'40.2- E092°29'52.6- [meaningless: unidentified geodetic datum, unidentified precision error] walk down slope following track through clearing down spur. At marked tree [Pease mark again to refresh smell] N25°15'30.8- E092°29'23.5- [meaningless: unidentified geodetic datum, unspecified precision error] bear right gradually downslope from the spur into dry river valley. Entrance 30 m downstream of [what once was in spring 2001 an] open clearer area below 2 m chute and above 4 m cascade in clean limestone. Hole in left wall looking downstream. CAVE DESCRIPTION: Rhys Williams (2001.02.05 Mss: Krem Kermit) distracts to see survey (note 4) as if any of the visiting sports cavers would have been be able to survey or to produce a cave plan. CAVE CONTENTS: Calcite [speleothems], white crystal deposits, rounded, sandstone rocks, cave pearls, rifts choked with fluvial deposits. TACKLE: 5 m rope ladder on entrance. 40 m rope for main pitch: two hangs. 30 m rope useful for rifts and SRT pitch of 5 m. PROSPECTS: Heading towards Krem Ryngo bottom? 15 to 20 m climb / pitch not descended. Poor draught. CULTURAL HISTORY: Rhys Williams (2001.02.05 Mss) focusses his unnelview to see the Location unlikely to have been visited before by young urban cave tourists from one of the islands of western Europe. CAVE LIFE: Few bats [Chiroptera, indet.] from top to bottom [sic!], toads [note 5] near entrance (hence the name), bees at entrance, Heteropoda spiders [Arachnidae: Aranea: Sparassidae: conf. Heteropoda sp.] in entrance & main shaft area, crab [Crustacea] skeleton seen at bottom (Williams 2001.02.05 Mss: Krem Kermit) of an unidentified man, women or thingumabob.ease mark again to refresh smell] N25°15'30.8- E092°29'23.5- [meaningless: unidentified geodetic datum, unspecified precision error] bear right gradually downslope from the spur into dry river valley. EXPLORATION HISTORY: 2000 February: Entrance area to main pitch reconnoitered. 2001.02.05: Rhys Williams, Mark W. Brown, Peter Ludwig and Amanda Edgeworth descended the main pitch and explored a maze area. 2001.02.06: Rhys Williams, Mark W. Brown and Peter Ludwig descended rifts to mouth of 2nd pitch. A passage length of 225.2 metres is claimed but neither were the survey data processed nor was a cave plan produced.
