An ice cave (sic! for: glacier cave) in the snout of the Milam glacier (note 1), which originates from the eastern slopes of the peaks Hardol (7151 m asl) and Trisuli (7074 m asl) and flow 18 km south-east covering an area of 53.95 square km with an estimated ice volume of 5.495 cubic km (BHATTACHARYA et al. 1984). SITUATION: The famous glacier sprawls in between 30°25' to 30°31' north latitude and 79°50' to 80° east longitude in the extreme north of the Munsiary Tahsil (Pithoragarh District) of the Kumaun region at an elevation of 3839 m which is 19 km in its length and 3 km width. The elevation at its moraine changes due to the summer duration, at its morain, the width is nearly 1/2 km (ARYA 1992: 108, 111) CAVE DESCRIPTION: The giant glacier and origin of the Goriganga is worth seeing sites (note 5) even though walking on the glacier is very dangerous to walk on the moraine, even the members may disappear in the unknown crevasses of the glacier actually glacial walking or treking is tortuous … (ARYA 1992: 117). Over the years, the Milam … glacier snout has been receding since 1906 or even before that as recorded by Cotter and Brown [note 2], who first mapped the position of the ice cave and the snout front. Mason, Jangpangi and Vohra [note 3] and Jangpangi [note 4] recorded the changing position of snout front with respect to the cairns erected by Cotter and Brown, in 1938, 1957 and 1966, respectively. … the glacier has retreated by 1740 m in 91 years … (SHUKLA & SIDDIQUI 1999: 163 - 165 with a snout position map, scale 1: 10'000).king is tortuous … (ARYA 1992: 117).
