THANGSKAI (Krem)

Description
A relatively »large circular collapsed doline« with unidentified dimensions contains no »obvious« cave passage but mostly daylight-lit undercuts, which are horizontally »deep« (no size mentioned). ETYMOLOGY: The Khasi verb "thang" means »to burn, to cremate« (SINGH, N 1906: 223) and the noun "ka skai" is »an evil spirit who causes flatulence« but the verb "skai" means »to corrupt food out of envy by mantras« (SINGH, N 1906: 185) or magic spells. SITUATION: At the base of a relatively large circular collapsed doline north of Lumshnong and about 15 minutes walk to the approximate west of Thangskai (25°11'45”N: 92°22'35“E). APPROACH: At a point (with an unidentified GPS position), where a coal lorry track had crossed in February 1997 the bed of an unspecified, relatively small stream with an unidentified name, follow the water course in an unidentified direction for 200 m upstream to where a doline lies on what once had been for a very short time a self-centered person's »the left« (sic!) without orientation. CAVE DESCRIPTION: Krem Thangskai or, perhaps, Krem Thangskei, has been interpreted as a relatively »large circular collapsed doline« (SANDFORD, E 1997b; Brooks, S J in: BROOKS, S J et al 1998: 29). SPELEOMETRY: »Estelle, Tony, J-Rat, Simon, Brian and Paul return to Thangskei [sic!] village to locate and explore other caves reputed to be located close to the village. Krem Thangskai [sic!] is surveyed for 70 m …« (Brooks, S J in: BROOKS, S J et al 1998: 29) in one way or another. At a closer look, however, »Krem Thangskai [sic!] is a bit suspect as we cannot find the original notes for the east branch« (Boycott, Antony "Tony" 2001.07.20 Mss).
NOTE 1: »Thangskei village« (Brooks, S J in: BROOKS, S J et al. 1998: 29) is the village of Thangskai 25°11'45”N: 92°22'35“E.

EXPLORATION HISTORY: 1997.02.18: Simon J. Brooks, Antony 'Tony' Boycott, Paul A. Edmunds, Anthony 'Tony' R Jarratt, Brian D. Kharpran Daly and Estelle Sandford »… return to Thangskei [sic!] village [note 1] to locate and explore other caves reputed to be located close to the village. Krem Thangskai [sic!] is surveyed for 70 m« (Brooks, S J in: BROOKS, S J et al. 1998: 29) but the "survey" (sports caver standards) of »Krem Thangskai is a bit suspect as we cannot find the original notes for the east branch« (Boycott, Antony 'Tony' 2001.07.20 Mss).
