Description
Two potholes in streambed. Both in the same joint taking some but not all of currently dry stream (Chapman, T 2001.02.06 Mss: Umladong 1 western). ETYMOLOGY: No specific name has become known for two potholes called after their location on the -um- (stream of water) known as Umladong (note 1). It is, however, probably not too far fetched to presume that both of these potholes (Chapman, T 2001.02.06) are rather vertical caves or whirlpools than defunct cooking vessels in a streambed. SITUATION: South of a certain village of Shongpnar (note 2). APPROACH: From Hadem [note 3] village (±12 m 25°14'18.7”N: 92°29'20.3-E: 970 m; 2001.02.06 13h30) take S.E. path from centre of village through cleared forest to rest [sic! for: reach?] a large streambed (dry), some 6 to 10 m wide. Follow this downstream to south. Scrambling over sandstone boulder and eventually reaching limestone beds. Approx. 80 m further downstream an 8 m climb leads down to both potholes. Currently (2015.10.13) since fiften years in a row I will try and contact Tom to see which way he went. It possibly is a long way as Tom does not have much regard for mere distance when he is on a mission! (Brooks, S J 2001.10.01 personal correspondence). CAVE DESCRIPTION: The larger of the two entrances is around 3 m by 4 m wide at the top, appearing to bell out lower down. Seemed about 15 m deep by rock dropping. The smaller to the east is 1 m square at the top and possibly 30 m deep, also belling out at depth (Chapman, T 2001.02.06 Mss). CAVE POTENTIAL: The amount of water they actually take is debateable as the stream [streambed?] does not appear to decrease in size downstream of them (Chapman, T 2001.02.06 Mss). CAVE CLIMATE -- outward air current: At unknown times both caves emit strong warm draughts creating columns of steam (Chapman, T 2001.02.06 Mss: Umladong 1 (western) 6/2/2001).Two potholes in streambed. EXPLORATION HISTORY: 2001.02.06: Nokin Dkhar from Shongpnar village told the cave name Krem Umladong to Allard Harris Diengdoh and Tom Chapman but Dil Bahadur 'Dilbahadur' Subedi and Kunga Darna (both from Hadem / Thlangmoi village and of the Mizo dialect speaking Beite / Paite tribe) guided pothole watchers to the entrance.
