Description
An unspecified cave called »Krem Siat Hadem« (Kharpran Daly 1998.02.17 after Raibok Patlong) is also called Krem »Wah Sathadem« (Arbenz, T 2007 map Shnongrim Ridge). ETYMOLOGY: The Synteng cave name »Krem Siat Hadem« (Kharpran Daly 1998.02.17 after Raibok Patlong) appears to commemorate a social accident as it translates into "Cave [on the] Stream [of the] Shot Hadem" where »hadem« (note 1) is a Kuki, one of the Naga clan of Kukis (note 2). SITUATION 1998: Kharpran Daly (1998.02.17, personal communication with Raibok Patlong) was told that »Krem Siat Hadem« lies somewhere south-east of Tongseng and thus on the eastern slope of the Shnongrim Ridge. SITUATION 2006: Arbenz, T (2006 map Shnongrim Ridge) shows »Wah Sathadem« near N25°19'02”: E092°30'11” (WGS84) and about 500 or 600 m in a direct line SSE from Tongseng (N25°19'28": E092°30'05” WGS84).
NOTE 1: »There are some Hadem colonies in the extreme eastern portions of the Jaintia Hills. It is these colonies which are sometimes referred to by other writers as "Kuki Colonies." They are settlers from the North Cachar Sub-division of the Cachar district within recent years. It is possible that the title Hadem may have some connection with Hidimba, the ancient name for the North Cachar Hills« (GURDON, P R T 1906: 2). »The word Hadem is possibly a corruption of "Hidimba," the old name for North Cachar« (GURDON, P R T 1906: 178 note ‡). NOTE 2: On the other hand, "riew hadem" is the »maize, Indian corn« while the verb "siat" means »to shoot« (SINGH, N 1906: 173, 202). The adjective "sat" means »hot, acrid, pungent«, the adverb "sat" translates into »sorely« and the noun "ka sat“ is »the trouble, a calamity« (SINGH, N 1906: 183).
