Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 06/01/2018

Numerous shafts to man-made underground chambers and cells (note 1) connected by an underground gallery are said to have been used as homes (in Pashtun: khana) of kafirs (literally: infidels, for: ancients). SITUATION: At an unspecified distance south-west of Kabul and in a hillock at Djaouz (Jawz, Jowz, note 2), which lies at a distance of about 1.5 km in an unspecified direction from one Tang Saidan or, perhaps, Shahidan (note 3) and in the neighbourhood of the southern flank of a hill called Kouh Qorough (note 4). The site is actually a large tappeh (tope) with important ruins (without recognised name): The surface is strewn with remnants of walls and relics of habitations constructed from worked or quarried stones alternating with slabs of schist. CAVE DESCRIPTION: Numerous shafts drop to subterranean chambers and a corridor, which connects a series of underground cells with high, vaulted ceilings and walls covered with polished plaster without frescoes. CAVE LIFE: Coleoptera: Tenbrionidae (LINDBERG 1962a: 5).brionidae (LINDBERG 1962a: 5).
