In the year 630 AD the Chinese Buddhist travelling scholar and pilgrim Xuanzang (note 1) took hide from a gang of some 50 dacoits in a natural cave (note 2), which was situated at the foot of a certain Sangala Hill (note 3) on the southern shore of a dry pool in a palasa forest (note 4), which was passed on the way from Sakala (Shakala, identified with Sialkot, 32°30'N: 74°31'N) towards the valley of the Jhelum (32°04'N: 74°45'E).
