Description
A was said to give access to a monsoon [note 1] swallet [note 2] in dense jungle (Sheen, R F 2004.02.16 revised 2004.02.22 Mss), which was not only interpreted as a narrow pot (Brooks, S J 2005.02.15 Mss: Um Im 5 (Shnongrim) 15-2-2005) and a rift pot yielding 124 m (Arbenz, T 2004.02 Abstracts.xls) but also as a pothole shaft yielding considerably bettered 277.18 m (Brooks, S J 2004.04.16 revised 2004.05.11 Survey Summary 2004). IDENTITY: Unknown but I was told on 22nd May 2015 that it is impossible to reconstruct what expedition cavers recorded ten or eleven years earlier (Arbenz, T 2015.05.22 Mss -Re: Um Im 5- e-mail). SITUATION: In the vicinity of Khaidong village and somewhere around and beneath the -Lost World Doline- on the eastern flank of the Shnongrim Ridge. SITUATION 2004.02.22: From Um Im (Deat tree) (note 3) 1 approximately 150 m NNE (Sheen, R F 2004.02.16 revised 2004.02.22 Mss). POSITION: The GPS position for the entrance of Um Im Cave 4 indicates a spot 144.9 m in a dirct line approximately north-northeast (126.8 m north, 70.0 m east) from a GPS position for the cave entrance to Krem Um Im 1. APPROACH 2005.02.15: Beginn with the approach 2005.02.15 for –>Um Im Cave 5 up to the base of doline (Lost World Doline) where an unspecified right [without orientation] leads to entrance of Um Im 5 that that is below obvious window exit of Um Im 4 some 8 m above doline doline (Brooks, S J 2005.02.15 Mss: Um Im 5 (Shnongrim) 15-2-2005). CAVE DESCRIPTION 2004a: A fine open rift pot circa 35 m deep by 20 m long by 5 m wide scramble down to a ledge with 20 m tackle needed to descend clean-washed monsoon swallet at the margin jungle (Sheen, R F 2004.02.16 revised 2004.02.22 Mss: Um Im 4 Part of Um Im 2-5 System). CAVE DESCRIPTION 2004b: The pothole allows expedition cavers to drop somehow down into somehow interlinked cave passages inside Um Im 2 Cave through to Um Im 5 Cave (BROOKS, S J 2004: 30). SPELEOMETRY: Arbenz, T (2008.01.20 Mss) counted Um Im 4 among thosecaves suspected to connect to Um Im 1 or Um Im 5 or Um Im 6 which are not surveyed or data missing.ct line approximately north-northeast (126.8 m north, 70.0 m east) from a GPS position for the cave entrance to Krem Um Im 1. History
EXPLORATION HISTORY: 2004.02.22: A certain Bat Skhen Rupon and one Ibadynnat Sukhlain guided Brian D. Kharpran Daly and Robin F. Sheen to the cave entrance (Sheen, Robin F. 2004.02.16 revised 2004.02.22 Mss: Um Im 4 Part of Um Im 2-5 System). 23.02.2004: Anthony 'Tony' R Jarratt, Quentin 'Cooper' Cowper, Joseph 'Joe' H. Duxbury and a certain MS (Mark Silo?) successfully added up several survey tape lengths and rapidly achieved the yielding of 277.18 m (Arbenz, T 2004.02 Mss: Abstracts.xls).
