Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 06/01/2018

A south-facing, 6 m by 2 m large cave entrance hidden by vegetation (Boycott, Antony 'Tony' 2004.02.28 Mss: Krem Haliewkor) gives access to the -Cave of the White Coloured Public Resting-Place Built of Stones on Both Sides of a Path-. It is an insurgence cave that was choked in February 2004 with mud 34 m in but Bikin Paslein, then the Samasi Village Headman (phone 215621), said it used to be open in the past so it should be checked every once in a while to watch sedimentation and de-sedimentation developing. ETYMOLOGY: The Khasi interogation -haw- means why not? —which is irrelevant here as the adjectiv -haw- means publicly (SINGH, N 1906: 81) and the adjectiv -lieh- means white (SINGH, N 1906: 117) while the Khasi noun -ka kor- is 1) a resting place built from stones on both sides of a path and 2) an engine, machine while -u kor- is a 1) mole cricket; 2) a kind of reed and the adverb -kor- means valuable, precious (SINGH, N 1906: 45). SITUATION: Boycott, Antony 'Tony' (2004.2.28 Mss: Krem Haliewkor) provides an apparently excellent cave access description, complete with fragments of GPS positions that had been read at a selection of waypoints. To retrace these directions, however, will be difficult because the provided GPS position result in a madly zigzagging tour: Upon leaving From Samasi IB (N25°24'01.6”: E092°32°57.4” unspecified precision error, WGS84, Boycott, Antony 'Tony' undated 2004.02) turn left [note 1] on road past playing fields [without GPS position] with church [without GPS position] on left. At point N25° [without N-minutes, perhaps: 24'?] 11.0”: E092°33'00.8” turn right [note 2] along track past house [without GPS position]. Turn left [sic!] immediately down valley to Shaktiman track past house [without GPS position]. Turn right [sic!] and follow ridge track [in an unspecified direction] to point N25°24'13.8”: E092°33'16.0” in clearing. Head down valley past paddy fields on right [sic!], turn right [sic! without GPS positin] at major path, past (N25°24'17.8”: E092°33'19.6”). At fork [without GPS position] turn left [sic!] downslope. Turn left [sic!] at cowshed [without GPS position] across paddy fields towards nearby hillock bearing 350° for 350 m. [the] Cave entrance [of Krem –>Hawliehkor] is 6 m + 2 m hidden by vegetation. Walk clockwise around hillock to reach Krem Sapiang, Krem Siej and Krem Tyngheng. CAVE DESCRIPTION (Boycott, Antony 'Tony' 2004.02.28 Mss: Krem Haliewkor): Flood sink [sic! more likely: spate sink]. Passage 6 m by 2 m ends in mud choke after 34 m, bearing 351°. Low passage to left 290° crawl over mud to low draughting duck after 20 m. PROSPECTS: Boycott, Antony 'Tony' (2004.02.28 Mss: Krem Haliewkor) reckons Krem Hawliehkor is probably an inlet to the entrance series of Krem Tyngheng.n] at major path, past (N25°24'17.8”: E092°33'19.6”). History

EXPLORATION HISTORY: 2004.02.27: Guided by Bikin Paslein, Semmasi Village Headman, Brian D. Kharpran Daly, Boycott, Antony 'Tony', Jayne Stead, Nicola 'Nicky' Bayley, Imogen Furlong and Andrew 'Andy' Heath (or Harp?) came down upon the cave and 'surveyed' (sports caver standards) a length 56 m (Arbenz, T 2004.02 Mss: Abstracts.xls) to a degree yielding a 'survey' (total sum of survey leg lengths) but no cave survey (cave plan).
