Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 06/01/2018

A sooted cave entrance, about 10 m wide, gives access to a relatively spacious and 110 m long cave (note 1), which descends an estimated 20 m or 25 m (note 2) to a voute mouillante (French) or, if you prefer, a duck or sump. SITUATION: The cave entrance lies at an altitude of 2150 m asl (note 3) in a limestone hill above the right (southern) bank of Ghorband River, approximately 3 km (south? of) and some 220 vertical metres above a place called -Pol- Ranga- (note 4), which itself lies at an elevation of about 1825 m asl (LINDBERG 1958: 118, 1961a: 9). CAVE CONTENTS: LINDBERG (1958: 118, 1961a: 9) says the floor is covered with rocks and bat guano. LINDBERG (1962: 6) notes that the two kinds of rock exposed in the cave are micaceous limestone schist and ceratitic limestone schist (determined by J. P. Hunger, personal communication). White salts efflorescense at many places on the cave walls and are composed, according to analysis, of magnesium sulfate (epsomite) with traces of dolomite siderite and calcite. CAVE CLIMATE: LINDBERG (1958: 118; 1961a: 9; 1962b: 76) observed a curious discrepancy between the temperatures measured in air and in the water and LINDBERG (1962a: 6) confirms particularly interesting temperature observations: date: 07.08.1957 12.05.1959 19.07.1960 Air in entrance 22°C 17°C 25°C Air at terminal pool 16°C 16°C 17°C Water in same pool 21°C 22°C 22.5° The water temperature of the rheocene spring (note 5), which may constitute an exsurgence below and a little east of the cave, was 22.5°C. CAVE LIFE: Compared with the biospeological quarry of the 1957 and 1959 seasons observed LINDBERG (1962a: 6) in 1960 a decreasing cave fauna inspite of extended hunting. In July 1960 not a single Coleoptera or Pseudoscorpion was found when only one solitary Araneid and three Acari were collected from the floor, the guano, and from the cave walls and only two or three bats were seen on the ceiling. History

EXPLORATION HISTORY: 1957.08.07: Knut LINDBERG (1958: 118, 1961a: 9) visited, explored and collected cave life. 1959.05.12: Knut LINDBERG (1961a: 9) visited again to collect cave life and to take altimeter readings. 1960.07.19: Knut LINDBERG (1962a: 6) visited for a third time, took additional altimeter readings and surveyed passage lengths, collected more cave life and increased the number of temperature measurements.
