Description

A triangular pothole (approximately 30 m north-south and 10 m east-west, up to 20 m deep) lies adjacent to a north-south trending geological disturbance and descends to dislocated boulders, in between of which an about 40 m long (Boycott 2005.02.11 Mss: Krem poh Lum Shynrngan) or 50 m long route was surveyed without encountering solid rock or a way on. EVALUATION (Boycott 2005.02.11 Mss: Krem poh Lum Shynrngan): Pothole with bedding plane extension cave choked with boulders strong draught followed for 40 m in boulder choke no way found. ETYMOLOGY: The term -shyrngang“ (Boycott 2005.02.11 Mss) may stand for the Khasi verb -shyngkhan- meaning to be in a fix or dilemma (SINGH, N 1906: 200). The Khasi adjective ”ngang” means very (bitter) as: ”nga sngawkthang ngang ba nga bain quinine” (SINGH, N 1906: 77). SITUATION 1: Somewhere -poh- (short of, below) a -lum- hill called Shyrngan (or so?) and, according to the GPS position, on the western flank of the Shnongrim Ride, due west of Khaidongvillage, and in the area between Krem –>Urle and the cave system of Krem poh –>Jingtep / Krem –>Shrieh (Khaidong). SITUATION 2 (Boycott 2005.02.11 Mss: Krem poh Lum Shynrngan), complete with three blunders minimum: From N25°21'08.9”: E092°30'48.0” (±4) on road near collection of huts and enclosed fields, walk downhill on bearing 345° to a point 2 N25°21'16.1”: E092°30'40.7” [note 1]. Continue on 345 to a stand of pine trees N25°21'23.3”: E092°30'39.9” [note 2], then on 045° into bamboo bowl with limestone pinnacles leads to N25°21'25.1”: E092°30'40.2” (±5.7) [note 3]. 20 m on 040° leads to head of climb into pothole. SITUATION 3 (Arbenz, T 2005.02 Mss: Abstracts.xls): N25°21'25.1”: E092°30:40.2”: (unidentified precision error, unspecified geodetic datum probably WGS84, Mark W. Brown, unidentified GPS receiver): 1034 m asl (unspecified method, unknown instrument). SITUATION 4: From waypoint N25°21'25.1”: E092°30'40.2” (±5.7) (WGS84, Boycott 2005.02.11 Mss: Krem po Lum Shynrngan after M.W. Brown 2005.02.11 12h09, GPS Garmin 12) the cave entrance itself is said to lie at an estimated distance of 20 m on a dubious bearing of 040° and thus near N25°21'26”: E092°30'41” (estimated ±60 m, WGS84). CAVE DESCRIPTION 1 (Boycott 2005.02.11 Mss: Krem poh Lum Shynrngan): Pothole is 20 m by + 20 m wide + 20 m deep way down dry watercourse at N end leads to under ledge on R to bolted belay for 10 m ladder to boulder floor. Wide cave entrance under SE wall is rapidly choked with boulders, route cane be followed for 40 m through some tight slots following strong draught, no way through found. Needs digging for further chances. CAVE DESCRIPTION 2 (Jarratt 2005.03.06 Mss: Cave Log, vol. XII, 11/2/05): A 10 m ladder drop to a floor where a bedding passage where flood debris and inward air flow indicates a route through boulders down into lower levels with at least one squeeze, many holes pushed in vain, and and impenetrable boulder choke. CAVE DESCRIPTION 3 (Books 2005.10.05 Mss: Meghalaya 2005 Survey Summary): 83.00 / 31.50 or 82.98 m long and 31.55 m deep. TACKLE: Boycott (2005.02.11 Mss: -Krem poh Lum Shynrngan- 11/02/05): 10 m ladder and belay (long).ooks 2005.10.05 Mss: Meghalaya 2005 Survey Summary): 83.00 / 31.50 or 82.98 m long and 31.55 m deep. TACKLE: Boycott (2005.02.11 Mss: -Krem poh Lum Shynrngan- 11/02/05): 10 m ladder and belay (long).

History

EXPLORATION HISTORY: 2005.02.11: Boycott, Antony 'Tony' and Anthony 'Tony' R. Jarrett explored and surveyed to a degree resulting after a lapse of mere 210 days in a pencil sketch of the ground plan (Boycott 2005.09.11) without cross sections of projected elevation. Anthony 'Tony' R. Jarratt (2005.03.06 Mss: Cave Log, vol. XII, 11/2/05), Boycott, Antony 'Tony', Jayne Stead, Mark W. Brown, Quentin 'Cooper' Cowper and Shelley A. Diengdoh … trooped down to this cave where Mark and Quentin drilled and biolted the pitch to allow me to descend a 10 m ladder to the floor. While Tony and Jayne commenced the survey and the others went off to descent the pot [Krem –>Myrsiang 1] in the banana plantation doline, I entered the bedding passage leading off to find the route. Flood debris and a strong inward draught indicated the route through boulders down into the lower levels and I returned to help survey after passing a squeeze. We mapped ou way in and after enlarging the squeze reached an impenetrable boulder choke after 80 m. … Various [unfortunately unknowable] other holes were pushed in vain [sic! for: without condsidering to survey] before we headed out and de-rig and soak up some sun. The others arrived at the same time having dropped their 18 m pot to find no way on but getting a few photographs. No spectacular discoveries today but pleasant enough all the same.
