Description
A south-east facing (Arbenz, T 2010 HummingMonkeyPlan_1000.pdf) and about 10 m wide, sloping entrance (Brooks, S J et al. 2009.02 Mss -Diary 2009.doc- entry Saturday 21st) gives access to a wide and dry passage … the bottom end of Shyngrong Shrieh and Thapba Long Siem (Kharpran Daly in: Brooks, S J et al. 2009.02 Mss). ETYMOLOGY: The cave name -Krem Khongreng- (Win Pala, Tangnub, 2009.02.21) appears to mean something along the lines of a Horn-like Cave or an Antler-like Cave as the Khasi -khong- means resembling, taking the likeness off and -ka reng- is a horn, an antler (OLDHAM, T 1854 / 1984 appendix C: lxi; SINGH, N 1906: 34, 171; GURDON, P R T 1906: 203). Bridget Hall and friends (2009.02.05 in: Brooks, S J et al. 2009.02 Mss -Diary 2009.doc- Thursday 5th February) fabricated the nickname Frog Cave (note 1) and subsequent attempts of artful khasificionation (note 2) resulted in a thoroughly alienated Gakoid Cave which makes no sense at all (note 3). Arbenz, T (2010 January -HumminMonkeyPlan_1000.pdf- dated 26.2.008 // 18.2.2009) introduced with Valley Entrance yet another locally unknown cave name. SITUATION: In a so-called Unbelieve Doline (note 4) where one has to cross … thick jungly lapiaz to get there. Basically take a bearing of 012° from Umthe 2 for 140 m and hold tight, it's a bumpy ride (Brooks, S J et al. 2009.02 Mss -Diary 2009.doc- Saturday 14th February). APPROACH: Unknown. POSITION 1: WGS84 N25°16'57”: E092°29'33” (note 5) or, about 250 m further NNE, near POSITION 2: WGS84 N25°17'05”: E092°29'35” (note 6) and this fits nicely with a bearing of 012° from Umthe 2 for 140 m (Brooks, S J et al. 2009.02 Mss -Diary 2009.doc- Saturday 14th February). EXPLORATION HISTORY: 2009.02.05: Jean-Pierre Bartholeyns, Bridget Hall, Hugh Penney, Joanna 'Jo' Hardy, and Vikram Singh Kirola (Leading Seaman, Indian Navy) were poking around inside Krem –>Shynrong Shrieh when Bridget Hall … suddenly saw some light ahead … it was daylight. Everybody dropped the survey kit and we were at 'Frog” entrance. The passage popped out into a massive doline (unbelieve doline) with big lapiaz in the base, lianas, large trees and lots of jungle everywhere. Hugh and Vikram went to climb out of the doline whilst Bridget, Joanna and Jean-Pierre finished the last three survey legs. Some exploration of the doline was made. Bridget and Hugh explored a chamber in one side but no real leads were found in it and there were a lot of very loose boulders making it dangerous. Then we turned around as it had reached 16:30 (Brooks, S J et al. 2009.02 Mss 'Diary 2009.doc' Thursday 5th February). 2009.02.14: Simon J. Brooks, Hugh Penney, Steve Whitlock, Gregory 'Gre' D. Diengdoh and Franklyn 'Toki' Dkhar … went to Krem Gakoid (Frog Cave) which is [Krem –>Khongreng, Win Pala 2009] the lower entrance to Krem Shynrong Shrieh. They found the entrance amazingly fast … (Brooks, S J et al. 2009.02 Mss 'Diary 2009.doc' Saturday 14th February). 2009.02.21: Brian D. Kharpran Daly, Vikram Singh Kirola, and Bishnoi Prakash persuaded Win Pala, a Tangnub resident, … to show them a cave he knew of. The 10 m wide, sloping entrance of Krem Khongreng gave access to … the bottom end of Shyngrong Shrieh and Thapba Long Siem (Brooks, S J et al. 2009.02 Mss 'Diary 2009.doc' Saturday 21st).
