Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 06/01/2018

The first recorded of the four known cave entrances (note 1) to Krem Um U Siar is a sinkhole in a closed depression (5 m or 6 m wide and 4 m deep). IDENTITY: The first recorded cave entrance, Krem Um U Siar 1, is indicated as p-4m Entrance 2 (sic!) on the cave plan near survey station 5/11 (Arbenz T 2011.08.12 UmUSlarplan.pdf). ETYMOLOGY: The origin and meaning of the name for this cave called after the stream -Um U Slar“ has not yet been discovered (Arbenz, T 2011.03.27 Mss ”Imogen Furlong 2011.02.20” Krem Um U Slar 1 & 2, 19.2.2011) and Imogen Furlong was thought to have expressively said -Slar- (note 2). It seems likely that the recorded -u slar- is a writing / reading error instead of the Khasi word -u siar- for a cock in the sence of a male bird, esp. a rooster. If this is the case, -Krem Um U Siar- translates as Cave [on the] Male Bird's Stream [of Water] (note 3). SITUATION: The first recorded of the four known cave entrances to Krem Um U Siar (close to the only recorded GPS osition near survey station 5/11) lies about 80 m in a direct line (cave survey) due north of the cave entrance to Krem –>Um U Siar 2 (near survey station 1/0). APPROACH: To reach one or the other of the four distinct cave entrances of Krem Um U Siar from the village of Kseh (St. Joseph church near 25°25’24.0”N: 92°35’32.9”E: circa 880 m), arrange for getting transported (about 1.5 km in a direct line ESE) down to a jetty (25°25'49.1”N: 92°36'15.1”E: 717 m) on the orographically left (locally western) bank of the Kopili River (26°15'N: 92°10'E). Cross the river and proceed along a footpath east to a certain the farm (note 4). About 560 m in a direct line approximately north-east (370 m north, 420 m east) from the farm lies the doline (5 m by 8 m wide, 4 m deep) with the cave entrance to Krem Um U Siar 1 or p-4m Entrance 2 (Arbenz, T 2011.08.12 UmUSlarplan.pdf). About about 510 m approximately ENE (415 m north, 290 m east) or an estimated 200 m to the NE lies the 30 m wide dolie with several entrances (Arbenz, T 2011.03.27 Mss ”Imogen Furlong 2011.02.20” Krem Um U Slar 1 & 2) to Krem Um U Siar 2 or Entrance 1 in doline (Arbenz, T 2011.08.12 UmUSlarplan.pdf). CAVE DESCRIPTION: In case of having entered the downstream Entrance 1 in doline to Krem –>Um U Siar 2, a relatively long upstream crawl to the north leads to a junction. Both ways on lead to entrances, one of which is Krem Um U Slar 1 (Arbenz, T 2011.03.27 Mss ”Imogen Furlong 2011.02.20” Krem Um U Slar 1 & 2, 19.2.2011) and the other two are Krem –>Um U Siar 3 and Krem –>Um U Siar 4.TACKLE: None required (Arbenz, T 2011.03.27 Mss ”Imogen Furlong 2011.02.20” Krem Um U Slar 1 & 2, 19.2.2011). PROSPECTS: Concerning some aspects of the known part of this cave, a first, preliminary topographical survey [once had been] finished (Arbenz, T 2011.03.27 Mss ”Imogen Furlong 2011.02.20” Krem Um U Slar 1 & 2, 19.2.2011). CULTURAL HISTORY: There was none known to Arbenz, T (2011.03.27 Mss ”Imogen Furlong 2011.02.20” rem Um U Slar 1 & 2, 19.2.2011) CAVE LIFE: Somebody noticed on 19th or 20th February 2011 spiders, crickets in unidentified conditions (Arbenz, T 2011.03.27 Mss ”Imogen Furlong 2011.02.20” Krem Um U Slar 1 & 2, 19.2.2011): Aranea: conf.
