Description
A collapsed cave entrance leads to the relic of one solitary, abandoned stream cave passage of phreatic origin (initially 10 m wide and 3 m high) which, deteriorating in size, leads to a collapse area and boulder choke 35 m from the entrance. IDENTITY: Boya Dari (Boyadari) is possibly one of the two caves »westward of Gorlagootla« (FOOTE 1884a: 33-34) or »Gorlogunta« (FOOTE 1885: 235). ETYMOLOGY: The noun "dari" arrives from the Sanskrit "dvar" (dwar) and translates into door, gate, entrance or pathway (hence cave) while "boya" (note 1) was said to mean »hunter« (M. Narayana Reddy 1996.12.15 personal communication) and is one of the »… traditional groups like the Dabba Yerukalas, Kunchapuri Yerukalas and Boyas who are acculturated into the village economy leading a symbiotic life, but still depend on hunting and foraging for their subsistence and exchange« (MURTY 1985: 192). On the other hand, "boya" is the name of »a grass from which rope is made, Saccharum ciliare« (IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 25: vi). SITUATION: About 40 m vertically above the northern bank of the Muchchatla vagu and opposite across from –>Errabadde.
NOTE 1: Not seen: PRASAD, B R (1978): The Boyas in ancient Andhra society.- Journal of Indian History 56 (1): 21-25 [MURTY, M L Krishna 1985: 204].
