Description
About 40 openings, all at one and the same level, give access to an abandoned coal mine (note 1) which was worked up till 1958. Some of the numerous ramifications terminate in dead ends but others lead to systems of galleries with small chambers, pillars and more side passages. All the passages Dr. Lindberg visited were narrow and often only of stooping height. SITUATION: The coal mine lies at an elevation of 2210 m asl (barometric, LINDBERG 1961a: 15) on the flank of the hill (without recognised name) near -Chileh- (Chineh?) Hamam, a place upstream of Masjede Chubi (note 2) in the north-eastern corner of Karukh district (Lindberg's Karokh) in Herat province. Masjede Chubi lies at an approximate distance of 60 km (along the road?) north-east of Herat, and at the western-most slopes of a mountain range called Kouh - Sabzzak (Zarmast) (LINDBERG 1961a: 15), which is a part of the Safid Koh (Paropamisos mountain range) or another name for it. Compare with the Cave at –>Zarmast (Faryab povince) and the Cave at –>Khwaja Sabz Posh (Maymana or Pashtun Kot district). CAVE CLIMATE: Humid in many places but water re-assembles nowhere. Some air temperatures measured on 18th June 1959 were 30°C near the entrance and 12°C in one of the galleries.About 40 openings, all at one and the same level, give access to an abandoned coal mine (note 1) which was worked up till 1958.
