Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 04/07/2016

The »Cave [on the] Stream [of the] Village« is neither a cave nor has a dark zone but is an bogaz (note 1) with a partly roofed rift passage (estimated 12 m long and 5 m deep) in Cherrapunjee Sandstone. ETYMOLOGY: No autochthonous, indigenous or locally known name has been identified -- if it exists -- for what was said to be the "Wah Shnong" (Village Stream). SITUATION: Unknown. Somewhere at a walking distance of about 20 minutes approximately south-west and downhill from the village of Laitkynsew (note 2).

NOTE 1: Bogaz (Slavic: Slovene): A linear fissure or box valley through a karst block, effectively a giant grike, perhaps 50 m deep and 1 km long, formed by dissolution on a fault or joint in very massive limestone. Also known as –>corridor and –>zanjone (LOWE & WALTHAM 1995: 6). A long narrow chasm enlarged by solution of the limestone. Compare –>struga, –>zanjon (MONROE, W H 1970 / 1972: 3). Corridor (Spanish): Relatively narrow passageway permitting travel between two larger areas; 2) A fairly level and straight passage that links two two or more rooms or chambers in a cave; 3) An intersecting linear depression on the surface of the land, related to joints or dikes (MONROE, W H 1970 / 1972: 6). Struga (Slavic): A –>corridor formed along a bedding plane in karst country (MONROE, W H 1970 / 1972: 17). See –>bogaz (LOWE & WALTHAM 1995: 39). Zanjòn, zanjone (Spanish): In Puerto Rico, solution trench in limestone. Zanjones range from a few centimeters to about 3 m in width and from about 1 m to 4 m in depth. Apparently they form by the widening and deepening of joints by solution (MONROE, W H 1970 / 1972: 19). See –>bogaz (LOWE & WALTHAM 1995: 39). NOTE 2: Laitkynsew near (±250 m) 25°13'00”N: 91°39'25”E (WGS84 modified from 25°13'00”N: 91°39'35”E Everest 1830, Survey of India 78-O/16 edition 1912) at elevations below 896 m asl (modified from 2940 feet, Survey of India 78-O/SE edition 1917).
