Description
An about 90 m deep coal mine that yielded a delicate and fragile, blind and about 5 mm long amphipod featuring no trace of eyes (CHILTON 1923: 195). SITUATION: According to Dr. John W. Tomb (note 1), Jamuria Colliery is situated in the thana [note 2] of Jamuria in the Asansol Sub-Division. Jamuria (note 3) lies above the left (north-east) bank of the Damodar Valley and about 10 km north-east from the town of Asansol (note 4), which lies at a travelling distance of 96 km along the National Highway NH2 north-west from Barddhaman / Burdewan / Burdwan (N23°15': E87°45'), the district headquarters. COLLIERY DESCRIPTION: Dr. John W. Tomb (in: CHILTON 1923: 195) was informed by the Manager of the Jamuria Colliery that the pit in which these Crustacea were found is 300 feet [91.44 m] deep and CHILTON (1923: 195) confirms that the Jamuria colliery was 300 ft. deep (note 5). CAVE LIFE: CHILTON (1923: 195-196) gives a taxonomical description the eyeless, whitish coloured amphipod (Crustacea)Niphargus indicus … body slender, dorsal surface with a few scattered hairs, one or two stouter setules on each pleon segments 4, 5, and 6. No trace of eyes seen. … Length 5mm, colour whitish. Both STADLER (1927: 99) and WOLF (1937, 2: 514) refer to Neoniphargus indicus CHILTON (1923). According to MESSOULI, HOLSINGER & RANGA REDDY, Y. (2007: 33), CHILTON (1923) provides a taxonomical description of Indoniphargus indicus collected from various groundwater habitats (e.g. springs, well water, mine pit) in the north-eastern [more likely: eastern] states of Bihar [more likely: Jharkhand], Orissa [Chhattisgarh?], and West Bengal but Chilton's material originated only from the Jamuria colliery.Niphargus indicus … body slender, dorsal surface with a few scattered hairs, one or two stouter setules on each pleon segments 4, 5, and 6.
